I just bought 4lbs of Vitargo to help enhance my strength workouts. It would appear to have some serious benefits for us endurance athletes. Anyone have any knowledge about this?

I know that it acts as a volumizer and pulls water and nutrients into the muscels. Other than that, how is it like creatine? I found this by accident. I was looking for a good after workout recovery drink and my local vitamin shop guru recommended this. I didn't pay a ton for it, but I would hate to think that it is total crap. Is there someone out there with a background in nutrition or has had exposure to this that can offer some additional insight?

Here is what I found on the web:

Vitargo (potato starch): Vitargo® is a brand name of a high-density carbohydrate product formulated from potato starch. Potato starch will empty quickly from the stomach into the small intestine where it will form a gel. This gel will release glucose into the bloodstream over a period of time which may offer athletes a source of fuel for long-duration activities. Potato starch may also help to “smooth out the action of insulin if taken in conjunction with a higher-glycemic carbohydrate. Some sports-performance products include potato starch in a carbohydrate blend to enhance glycogen replenishment and to balance blood sugar levels elevated by the simpler carbohydrates in the formula.

There are several Vitargo products. Vitargo-CGL contains creatine. If you want potato starch, I know a store that will provide you with 5 or 10 pounds of it for a dollar or two --- try your local grocery store, and pick up a bag of potatoes.

I'm not surprised that a vitamin/health food store would tout and sell high priced products such as this --- they make tons of money doing it. And there's a steady stream of customers willing to pay.

Sorry for the flippant answer this am...I hadn't had any tea yet...
Vitargo, depending on the site you look at contains "Pure Pharmaceutical Grade creatine Monohydrate" or "creatine" or "is better than creatine."
I am NOT a nutritionist but creatine is not something that endurance athletes generally use. While it does help with muscle size and bulk (think football) most of the endurance athletes I know who have tried it were not happy.( cramping, nausea, diahrea)
You want a good after workout drink for endurance workouts...try R4...or a turkey and cheese wrap and a glass of milk.
Somewhere, buried in this site is a thread about creatine...which was full of info.
all the best in working out your nutrition needs.

Hmmmm....I'm confused and wondering if I have become a sucker. Before I admit that though, I would like to submit for further review that the Vitargo I bought does not have creatine in it. However, the label (and the owner of the shop touting it) says that it is a superior "transport" vehicle for nutrients (i.e., creatine, protein, glutamine, etc...) According to the owner, the benefit is primarily muscle recovery. The label touts its benefits for "triathletes" among other sports. Again, something to do with carb loading glucose into the muscles for stronger workouts and faster recovery.

On another note, if it has 72 carbs per serving...none from sugar...wouldn't that be of some kind of benefit? Just curious, I don't really know enough about the different kinds of carbs.

Anyways, maybe it is as the hitman says...another way to package something simple and sell for high dollar. Well, I'm using all of it (it DID cost a lot) and I'll see how it works.

If anyone has anymore experience or knowledge please do tell.

And no Beads...unfortunately this isn't Viagra...ha ha ha
