I did a mock tri yesterday to see what my times will be to see what I need to work on most for the upcoming spring. I've always had issues with shin splints and they came back yesterday in full force unfortunately. They even woke me up last night when my shins hit each other when I rolled over. My calves were extremely tight after the ride and they never loosened up and I believe that is the cause. Does anyone have an opinion on using an eliptical machine in the place of my running while I give my shins a rest? I've never used one but I've read it uses the same muscles similar to when you run and is good aerobically.

Have access to a heated pool? I love pool running as a form of recovery, especially down here in the summer!

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

Hi Jason,

You have similar problems to me with the tight lower legs.

I have found that the ellipical running is a pretty good compromise for me when my calf's and lower limbs are very tight.

I get to have my workout without the pounding and jarring of the effected parts and it gives me a chance to either get do some self massage or see someone if i am worried.

By no means is it perfect, but it can help keeping your body from breaking down. The other benefit i have found is that i can work on my cadence as well - to get the body used to going quicker again.
