I've got kind of a weird problem that I need some help with. I am having a hard time staying hydrated, more specifically retaining water. I drink between 3-5 liters of water along with a little gatorade, multi-vitamin, 3 good sensible meals with a snack or 2, I've really cut my caffine intake and still the water just runs through me. Then during my workouts I start to feel dehydrated. ( I do take in some fluids during) I really just can't figure this out.

Some other considerations...I am in the desert right now, but the temps are quite mild right now. I thought at first is was antibiotics I was taking, but I've been off those for over two weeks with no improvement. I feel like my salt intake is adequate and I've even started adding salt to my meals. But still I've been "going" more then my 3 month old...I've been active all my life and never had this issue before.

Any suggestions? Am I missing something obvious? Has anyone experienced this?

Thanks for the help in advance

Rob

Check a doctor and see if you've got diabetis or something, 'going' a lot often is one of the symptoms.

If by running right through you, you mean yor're peeing constantly, then you are hydrated. Is it clear or colored? Ya migh even be drinking too much fluids, as too much can give the same symptoms as not enough. Try cutting back.

If your piss is NOT clear, than a trip to the doc is in order. I recommend mixing more gatorade in there somewhere.

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

Peeing a lot indicates you are hydrated, that's a good thing. If you aren't eating enough for the amount of water you are taking in then you can go to the other extreme. Hypernutremia is cause by drinking so much that you are flushing out needed electorlytes. I don't necessarily recommend a ton of gaterade but you might want to think about your nutrition and how much you eat, what you eat and how much you are drinking.

What symtoms are you experiencing that make you think you are dehydrated during your workouts? Is your pee clear and oderless??? Do you feel thursty even though you are drinking plenty of water?

I have been taking in about 20 ozs of accelerade during my workout along with water and then another 20ozs of gatorade throughout the day. I really feel like my diet is good. I am peeing alot and it does tend towards clear( not dark).I drink and then I have to go. My symptoms during my workout are that I am thirsty and drink during (more then usual) and towards the end I get that run down feeling that if you've ever been a little low on fluids you know what it feels like. I may be drinking alittle too much but isn't that better then not enough?

I had a pretty thorough physical the begining of Nov with a clean bill

I have seen 2 cases of overhydration, Hypernutremia and that can get pretty ugly cause the first response is always to push fluid. In one case the guy went into a coma.

Thanks again for the help

Of course, the other side of the coin is that sodium consumption can result in excess urination. http://hyper.ahajournals.org/cgi/content/full/38/3/317

Its possible that you're caught in a cycle of overconsumption of both fluids and salt. As trimedic said, you need to assess your food, fluid (and salt) intake.

Hello Rob:
I agreed with Trimedic and Hitman....might be a dietary issue, more than anything else...
Here is my two cents:
Is your diet, very high in proteins...?? That can also acelerade the GFR(Glomerular Filtration Rate) and the result is a high urine output.

Also how is your sodium intake..sodium will help your kidney to retain water...
But bottom line if you get "symptoms" like lack of energy...feeling thisrty...go get a check with a doc.

Hey Rob, are you drinking tap water, bottled water ot filtered water?
I live in a city, and the water is so full of iron and chlorine that I actually could drink gallons a day and still not feel hydrated, if you are drinking tap I would consider trying filtered, or bottled water or get an attachable filter for your sink or a Britta pitcher filter or something like that I no longer drink my tap water! You can be peeing a bunch but it is garbage water that is where I was!

Anyways, a thought!

Ya say you have been going more than your 3month old...How often?
Some trifulers recently(myself included) in a thread on "Pee" as to how many times we go a day...it ranged from 13 to 16 I believe.
I'm with triguy...there is such a thing as dirinking too much...Try the cut back

Eric, I Drink bottled water, but it's still not the best water in the world. We get several different kinds, but they all have alot of minerals and the PH ranges from 7.3 to 7.6

Anton, By alot, I was going probably 12-15 times a day....

But I think I've figured it all out...I think the biggest thing was when I was eating and not when or what. I started getting up early and eating a few hours before my work out and then a snack and some sports drink right before. I've also been in the habit of cutting my sports drink by about a 1/3 (watering it down) now I'm going with full strength stuff.

Thanks all for the Help!!!!!!!!!!!

Rob, you say that you are " in the desert right now". Some thoughts: Are you away from home? Are you at a higher elevation? I find that when I go to a higher elevation (for example, if I visit friends in Colorado), then I pee an obscene amount, yet i'm still very thirsty.

Also, since you are in the desert, perhaps your sweat is evaporating quicker than it would on your home turf, and your body just isn't used to it yet.

Hey,

That's a lot of drinking !
As the guys said, too much drinking ain't good for you.

When I was a competitive swimmer I did like you: 3+ liters of water / day. Everytime I had a blood check, the doc told me I had "thick" blood : you don't drink enough!
In fact, I had also cut the salt off my diet (for stupid reasons).

Now that I'm "old", and wiser I guess, I learned that too much drinking ain't good & that salt will help you "keep" the water in you.
You don't need to flush yourself all the time.

Good luck
