Foot Pain While Riding

Hey everyone!

I've been having a weird problem on the bike lately. After a couple hours, I start getting pain along the outside edges of my feet (a little on the left, more so on the right). It's not so bad I can't ride through, but enough to make me know something's not right.

I know I have tendency to supinate (underpronate), so this probably has something to do with it.

Anyone have the same problem, or suggestions for a remedy?

Thanks!!!

I took my insoles out of an old pair of running shoes. Problem went away. Shoe fit is critical.

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

What sort of pedals are you using? Are they shimano spd style or do they have a larger platform? Also, what kind of shoes are you using?

If your pedal contact area is too small (like from an spd style pedal), that may be causing a pressure point. If your shoes don't have a stiff enough sole, then they may be flexing causing some pain. A third possibility is that your shoes are too narrow or don't fit you properly.

Can you give us a little more info on your shoes and pedal setup and whether or not you had your shoes sized at a store?

I had the exact same problem. I have spd pedals and tri shoes (carbon fiber bottom...very stiff). During a couple of 100 mile enudurance rides I noticed that around mile 60 the inside of my right foot would start to kill me...very crampy and sore. I went to my LBM and talked to one of their guys who just finished chiropractic school. He looked at me on a stationary trainer and figured out the deal. I was pronating and putting too much stress in the wrong place. He said it is a common issue and easily resolved by adding shims between the shoe and cleat. The problem is in finding someone who knows what they are doing and can spot this for you. Good Luck.

Thanks for the replies!

I use the spd-sl pedals (not the little MTB spd's). I also have tri shoes with a carbon fiber bottom, so stiffness isn't a problem. I also know the shoes fit well - if anything I have problems finding shoes narrow enough, but anyway these fit great.

I'm sure I'm rolling to the outside (same problem jsoder, but in reverse!). I'm going to call my LBS and see about fixing the problem.

Thanks everyone!

Very similar situation for me. Good shoes - proper fit, carbon fiber etc. After 50-60 miles I got soreness/hot spots. All that I needed to do was to remove the inserts that came with the shoes and replace them with some made by Good Feet. My LBS carries those and recommended them. Since then - no issues at all.
