Frustrated
Hey, I know how you feel. I finished my last race of the year in August and thought I would take a little time off to relax. That relaxing became 5 months and 15 pounds. (I hate my scale)
I know where you are coming from as i have felt the same way you do. I feel guilty that I am not training, but for some reason don't get off my butt. I think though 2 things have turned me around today though. Firstly your message above has let me know that I am not the only one going through the blahs. And secondly I walked by a mirror and saw a side view of what I actually look like Not pretty!!
Anyways, keep your chin up. Get off you butt, and go run a mile or two. If we do that it should probably give us a little confidence to go for a bike the nex day. Keep in touch, maybee we could get to our 1/2 IM's together.
Take care.

I can understand some of what you are going through. It's good that you made a post to ask for help, that means you haven't given up hope and still want to do triathlons. Everone's different in what will get them motivated, for example a really hard run always manages to get me motivated and pulls me out of a lull at least a little. Another thing that might work for you (since running didn't work) that works for me is reading stories of people competing in triathlons. I found reading Becoming an Ironman to be incredibly motivating, also reading Lance Armstrong's It's not About the Bike. Finding other people to train with I think makes training a lot easier. I hope you can keep your head up and get back in the swing of things.
Hola zcowgirl3:
I was having trouble falling asleep and decide to come down here and read the new posts....
My friend you just took the first step to get back in gear...You did asked for help...that means is still in you....
You said that you need motivation....well, explore....like: read motivational stories....watch a movie about sports...find a trainning partner...pay attention to some songs out there, that might fire you up...write your thoughts....day in and out....where you can let it all go.
A few months back, when actually I discovered this site, I was going through a painful breakup...terrible....and trainning gave me the therapy I needed....
Go out for a nice run...maybe one or two miles....loose yourself....and find you on the way...look around a enjoy....go back to the basics....don´t go out because you plan to do a HIM or because there are some extra pounds in you....do it for the same reason we all do this....cause it gives us joy....is fun...
I wish you the best my friend....English is my second language but I tried my best and hope this few words gives you a little help.
So the next is.....
.....go out a have fun

Hey,
Thanks for being so honest. sharing feelings like that really shows what the sport is all about. Push yourself, use every muscle in your body to get you exercising again. Once you get moving for a couple of days ...you will start to feel better. It might not happen over night but stick w/ it because eventually it will pay off. Even if its just exercising. Exercise alone releases chemicals in the brain that help relieve depression and create a state of eruphoria. Exercise helps w/ your overall sense of well-being. Triathlons might be just what you need to get you through these hard times. Not only are there physical benefits but the mental benefits are far too many to mention. Relay on what you are good at and let exercise be your mental relief. If you need additional support always turn to use or another family member

I like, to the point and blunt SO here's some blunt for you-
Get your sh&*t together. You asked about supplements" Doctor, doctor, give me a pill and make me better. I don't want to take any active role in my problem just give me that*&^&*%&^ pill
that will make me better."
Great or even good jobs don't fall out of the sky, ususally they are earned by hard work. Gee, sort of like triathlon. Ya gets what ya put in. I had to move back with my parents. Boo Hoo. Stop your
self-pity. Maybe you would rather live out of your 1983 Tercel.
I'm fat boo hoo! Figure it out. I eat because I'm stressed. I'm stressed because I'm fat. I eat because I'm stressed and the circle goes round and round. Figure it out, too much in, not enough out! Rocket science here.
I can continue but enough tough love for today.
I agree with D. Rios. Remember why we do tri's. Enjoy yourself. Have fun.
I live in the 3rd world and see people everyday who have reasons to feel "Blah." (I was in Lusaka where there are over 700,000 orphans in that one city and the average life span is 38 years old.)
Use your training time as the wonderful stress release that it is. Remember how much you love the sport and feeling you get after a great workout and you won't need anything to motivate you. You may however need something to slow you down!

Hi cowgirl,
I'm of the Dr. Mutt school myself, heh. If you want a shoulder to cry on I'm not the one, at least not today. Put in some effort and then I'll let you cry a little, until then let your misery become your inspiration.
The mess you're in didn't all come together overnight, so it's not all going to go away overnight. Here is a simple direct plan to get started with.
1. Do some exercise activity, something that you like to do: play racquetball, jog around the block, something you can note on a calendar or in a diary. Finish it. That's important, so don't say "I'll run 20 miles." then not do it. That's the mistake many people make.
"Success is built on a foundation of many small accomplishments." - PoC
2. Tomorrow, do it again. Or do a different exercise activity. The point is to develop a habit of succeeding, and looking at a diary/log of your little successes is the key.
3. Wash. Rinse. Repeat.
The effect is cumulative and cyclical. Each time you set out to do a simple thing like jogging around the park, say, 3kms even, you are building a foundation of fitness and success, developing a habit of accomplishing what you set out to do.
Your attitude and physique will improve hand-in-hand, so like Lao-Tzu says,
"The journey of a thousand miles is begun with a single step."
Good luck. Live strong.

Winter in Cleveland --- no wonder you're depressed!
Seriously though, the bottom line is that if you want it, you not only can get back in great shape, but enjoy it as well.
Is there any reason you can't eat healthy and lose a few pounds? Any reason you can't get out and run a few miles, or hit the gym?
And frankly, I'm wondering if maybe you're being too hard on yourself. You're young, an experienced runner, and have completed several triathlons --- its difficult for me to believe you're very far from being in top shape. As Dr. Phil would say, you might need a reality check
Best of luck in your training for the 1/2 IM.

zcowgirl,
I am glad that you had the heart to at least ask for help. Maybe part of the problem is the stress-full holidays,,,not everyone just loves them and if you are having probl it seems to make it worse. I understand about the weight, I have lost alot, but 20 lbs seems to have crept back on in the last year. That is with the training for 1/2 IM. I had to save up to talk to a Nutritionist and I think have it back on track. You have to eat....good stuff. Also go out and do something everyday...run, swim, bike, walk something. It will def. make you feel better and may help to pull out of your funk. Heartache...I know everyone sez' it will get better and it will but it is kindof like anything else that is hard. You have to do it day by day. Your life will get better just work it a day at a time. And talk to us and your friends and family. You can do it. Now go for a run, forget the the watch, HR monitor, GPS..just run .

Words are just words whether they are supportive or a kick in the butt - there are some of both here on the other posts. What it comes down to is You. Recognizing that you need to kick it into gear is great - Now do it. No one can make you do something that you don't want to do. You are who you have to rely on. You have to Want to make the effort. Make some small goals and I mean small goals. And then go out and accomplish them. Success breeds success - it'll get you on a roll. Training can be a great escape from all the frustration and dissappointments that life hands out. Don't overwhelm yourself with daunting large goals - just get out and take those baby steps and feel good about making progress.

The fastest way I have found to get me motivated again is to sign up for an event (5K ,10k 1/2marathon, tri, whatever, anything). Then I have goal to work towards, and it brings a ton of stuff in to focus, rather than just amlessly working out for the sake of working out.

Rcortesi's right -- sign up for something!!! I just found these links to road race calendars in Cleveland (I figured more likely to find simple running races as opposed to tris or bike events in Jan/Feb/Mar)

My other suggestion, go to the articles on this site and re-read a couple of the ones on motivation, sports psychology, and the Through The Wall stuff. That's what I always do when I need an emotional kick in the pants to get myself moving again.
You can do it! It's hard to get out of the cycle of not exercising-feeling fat-etc... but clearly you've done it before. Hang those Wranglers on the wall, and put your running shoes and training diary next to them. Once every 3wks, try them on. If you've been passing them daily while you lace up your shoes and record your workouts, guarantee that they're going to fit in no time!!
Good luck!

Don't make me cycle my butt to Cleveland and kick you in the @$$!
Just get started. Start with the even you like the most. Do a short workout. Give yourself time to get started again. Work out a plan. I like to workout two or three weeks of workouts so that I know what I "have" to do. But don't be hard on yourself if you don't get them all done. I think that if you start a run you will go farther than you had planned. Once you get out there and remember what it was like and what it was that made you start in the first place.
Don't be so hard on yourself. Also keep in mind that this sport is a way to meet new people. Join a cycling team if there is one in you local area. That's a great way to get motivated.
Good luck.
Many thanks to ya'll who have replied back as well as the personal messages. I know what needs to be done and with ya'll replyin' back w/ positive and some kick in the butt messages I'm set. Got a plan so to speak underway and we'll see what goes from there. I'm not likin' the soreness though that has already taken affect however it feels like the start of track season all over again...lol, tis the season for it now isn't it?
The search for a cyclin' team is actually underway. I'm might be teamin' up w/ a team in North Canton to do some seperate races and just see what I can do w/ that before or maybe durin' Tri season. I planned of doin' a half marathon (maybe 2) w/ my awesome friend who said he's goin' to come here to kick my butt...I still like ya though Mike. (terd)
Even though I don't personally know anyone or talked to anyone that posted a reply to you, I'm going to try to speak for the group. And if nothing else just speak for myself. Thanks for updating us on how you are doing, and we're very glad that you are feeling much more optimistic.
Awesome girl!!!!!
You sound to be on the right path again...
Congrats...as fellow athletes and friends...in great to read your plan and that finally you are back....
Keep us updated....
Felicitaciones

There is lots and lots of advice here...
The only advice I can give you is... JUST DO IT, when it hurts afterwards, and you are tired...
Get up the next day and JUST DO IT again... , then
Get up the next day and JUST DO IT again...
When your body gets back into the swing of things, everything else will fall into place...
(but the main thing is to JUST DO IT)

I'll be blunt and to the point w/ this thread.
I'm not motivated, to many issues and problems to deal w/ like everyone does and (lol) I'm fat.
See? To the point huh? Sad I know but I trust ya'll enough to help me out as ya'll and myself do on here. I am un-motivated so to personal issues (bad break up that I can't get over) as well as havin' to move in w/ folks, college can kiss my butt, not a really good job yet enough money for a payment of an apartment I'm lookin' for and yes..the fat thing. I have gained weight and haven't been this uh, gross in a very long time. Pregnant doesn't count. I need motivation ya'll, I get help and words from a good friend of mine but it is hard when he is there (far) and I'm here. So, the trainin' by yourself ordeal sucks. My mom even tries! I dunno, is it a funk? Is it just blah? (lol) I know too that it is goin' to be a tough time gettin' into the swing of things again. Last yr. I just jumped into it after my track season so yea, for not doin' anythin' for 2 1/2 months is not good. I tried runnin' a few times and yea, not gettin' into that story. I need motivation, I need your help out there. Give me some..hell, kick my butt in gear. I have a Half Iron Man to compete in this season!
Another thing I am in need of and I think I've asked before was about supplements and or whatever to help get me into shape as well as some muscle mass. (hope that sounded right) Anyone have any thoughts on this or opinions? What has helped you out ( I would think mostly a women athlete question) but I want to lose weight, trim up and gain some muscle. Weight loss pills to supplements...I just don't have a clue. I've done research but what the hell do I know...I know some but not as much as many experienced people out here.
Help me ya'll. I need it. I tried talkin' to people I know who are athletes, I've tried w/ my folks to get me in gear...just to much on the mind and I am sick of feelin' gross and not bein' able to fit in my wranglers dangit!!
Much heart to ya'll who help me out...don't know how much it means.
