listening to music?
Typically, no.
I've never seen a race where headphones were allowed on the bike. Makes sense to me as it's really not safe.
I've been in 1 tri where they announced, on race day, that headphones were OK on the run, but must tris do not allow them on the run.
Most races will have their rules available in advance, or you can ask during a course talk.
I'm a headphone addict when running, so part of my race preparation routine includes doing a few long runs without music.
Mostly no.
USAT races don't allow them at all.
Some local may allow on the run - so as was previously stated - check the race website for the rules.
I train without headphones anyway, so not an issue for me.

Most of the races I have done don't allow head phones -- for safety reasons. I often listen to music during my training rides/runs, but I like to take them off during races so I can take in as much of the event as possible. It also helps keep me in tune with how my body is performing as well as those around me.

Not sure about everywhere, but its actually illegal to ride your bike with music on in a lot of places. Can't hear the traffic as well. I still do ride sometimes with music, but only one earphone and always in my right ear, fairly low volume.

The only training I do with tunes is indoors. I have never run or ridden with music, and wont start. I like listening to the sound of my bike, body, and my surroundings. Keeps you in the zone.
Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.
I go back and forth on listening to music. On really long bike rides in the middle of nowhere I may listen to music (right ear only, volume on low).
When running as I'm building up my base and going on a 2+ hour run I will listen to music. But at some point in my training season, I find that listening to music slows me down, because it distracts me from keeping up maximum effort.

Really is a safety concern as it is a distraction. Might be okay on the trainer or treadmill, but not good on the road. And why would you train differently than you race? Part of racing and training, especially for longer distances, is mental discipline/strength.

I use my headphones on the treadmill. I would have to kill myself if I couldnt...
All of the local sprint tri's I have done here allow them on the run, and I have actually used them. IM though will not allow them at any point, and they drive that into your memory banks. So, I usually dont wear them when I do my long runs .

This may be a dumb question, but druing a race, will I be able to listen to music on the run/bike? Not sure if there are rules against headphones or anything...
