I have a bit of a silly question. What does everybody out there wear in triathlons or even training for them? Do you wear a noodle bender(speedo) in the water and then put bike shorts on over top? Then run in the speedo again after? Or do you just bike in a speedo? Does it hurt the sensitive parts if you do? Keeping in mind I don't have a lot of money to throw at this right now. What would be best on a budget? Thanks, much appreciated.

Lots and lots of previous discussions on this. Do a search.

If you have a tight budget try a race or two and train for a while with the clothes you've got and see what is important to you.

If you want to spend a little money...................
For racing I recommend getting yourself some tri clothes because you don't want to change during the race. You can use them for training as well but for longer rides I prefer cycling shorts. I keep all of my good clothes out of the pool because the chlorine eats them up pretty fast.

For swimming I use a chlorine resistant suits and just change to bike shorts when I do a brick workout from the pool. These swim suits are cheaper then tri and bike shorts and last much longer.

You can use a trisuit, which is what I race in. Wear the whole thing under the wetsuit, and then bike and run in it. Never used a speedo before, not sure how it is on the bike, but hey......Faris did it for 4:30 and won Ironman Hawaii so it can't be too bad.

I have seen guys do the shorter distances in a speedo but for a longer bike ride I can't imagine that would feel good for man or woman. You just don't want to have to waste the time changing your clothing so swim in whatever you are going to wear for the remainer of the race. As far as training goes you don't have to worry about the transition so it really doesn't matter what you wear so much. You need to be comfortable. I wear my padded bike shorts during a brick and just run in them. Yeah it feels like I have a big loafer in my shorts but it's ok. :)

the first triathlon i did i just hand some underarmour shorts and basketball shorts that i wore during the swim and run. i didnt get to sore but i dunno how far you are riding. mine was just a short sprint. for the bike and run i just threw on a t shirt, it worked fine for me. if you wanna get a hold of a tri jersey you could look up team javelin which offers a sponsorship to amatuer athletes, its something to look up i dont know much about it.

Thanks for all the advice everyone. I will research it more as well in previous posts as suggested. Sounds like it is a lot of personal preference.

in the actual triathlon, the vast majority of people wear either tri shorts or a tri suit. Tri shorts are essentially bike shorts with a thinner chamois, that's less prone to soak up water in the swim. you can find a decent pair for $40.00 You don't see many banana hammocks these days.

Thanks merlin and scott, I never really knew what a tri short was like. I will buy a pair for sure. Thanks a bunch. I guess I also need a biking jersey. They are pretty easy to find though.

You can probaly get a matching top.
Or you can get a 'Trifuel' top.

Check for the 'gear' link in the header next to the trifuel logo

I actually wish there were slightly shorter tri shorts out there. The standard cycling short inseam is around 8-9 inches which almost reaches your knee while tri shorts are 6-6.5 inches. A 3-4 inch inseam would make it easier to keep the thigh number markings visible and it still wouldn't look like a skimpy "banana hammock"

Check around on the various tri product websites.
I think they have a tri short with a shorter inseam.

Go with a speedo, it's a great way to stay cool on the run. And bike for that matter.

I've seen shorts for women with the shorter inseam. Probably wouldn't help out you guys though.
