What do you do with your finishers medal?
I wore my IMC medal, (pathetic as it may sound), all the way home after the race and in the house (only the house) for a week. I kept looking at my tat and medal all week hehe. The family got used to it, and the kids kept asking WHEN am I gonna take it off. I felt proud of the accomplishment, sorry if it sounds stupid. Other than that I wear the medal of an event about a day or so, around the house and bask in the "glory" so to speak :p especially if I PR'd or won 1st or 2nd or so in my AG. Let's face it, you worked hard to get it, enjoy it! But remember it's for YOU and only YOU. The family understands, but others may not.

My first marathon I was so psyched I wore the medal to work the next day. I'd gotten tons of moral support from friends and colleagues at work during training, so it was fun to show it off!

My wife put together a display case for mine as a b-day present. She hung it up with a collage of pics from the races. I thought it was pretty nice. :)

While I have visions of a owning a highly-decorated display case, the truth is that I give them to my 4 1/2 year old twin-daughters who end up highly-decorating Barbie. :)
I wear mine to the car after the race, and that's usually it. When I get home, I put the number from the race on my wall and then numbers next to the bibs.

Seeing my collection get bigger and bigger over my bedroom doorknob is a nice feeling of accomplishment.
I don't think that I wear my medals even to the car for some reason... but they get special status hanging on my window crank at home. The cycling and tri medals I've gotten while at school hang on my music stand...

You're supposed to take them off??
I have all of mine on every day. I like the bling-bling look.
I wear it to the car and take it off and hang it on the mirror.
Then I bring it inside and hang it on my key rack.
I show it to the kids and they like to wear them around.
They really liked the Medal I got from the Disney Marathon,
but were disappointed in the IM Florida one.
I want to get all my finisher certificate framed and hang the medal on them eventually.

After I complete my first Marathon, I did wear the medal for a couple of days to the clinic...but I did realize that nobody else than family, dog, and fellow athletes understand what it means...
Some of my colleages still think that I am a little weird (big deal :p )LOL
But still now...after a half marathon...or anyother race..I wear the medal around the house for a couple of days....

I have a 4'x3' bulletin board above my desk. The 2003 IMC poster is on the left side with the medal hanging over the corner. The '05 poster and medal are on the right, just above my Finisher's Certificate and wrist band.
I glance up at them several times a day and visualize getting my '06 medal.

Im not sure I even wear them. I just throw it on for after race pictures, then stash it in my bag, I hang them on my dresser knob in my room, and stash the bib numbers in a box, hoping that one day I will have the time to put them up in picture frames as collages. ONE day. ;p

I used to collect them on a coat hook in my closet and then put the medals from special races somewhere where I could see them all the time. When I moved in June, I kept finding bib numbers everywhere and started collectinig them into a bag with my medals for future wall papering. I'm going to wait until I move back to Seattle and get a condo before I do anything with them. Maybe I'll wall paper a little area in my room for inspiration . . . The medals I am most proud of are my '99 Honolulu Marathon medal (my virgin race) and this years Penticton Half Mary medal (great race for me and I think my 10th half).

What does POTM mean PoC? I'm tired right now, so it is not obvious to me. But I guess it would have to smack me in the face right now to be obvious enough. :p

personally, I'm not much of a fan when it comes to the medals. I usually wear mine for about a minute or two and then take it off. While I feel like I accomplished something that only a fraction of the population has I don't feel all too special because everyone around me has the same medal draped around their neck (and when the number in the thousands). Granted I like getting the medal because it's another piece of memorabilia but I don't feel unique when everyone else has got the same thing on at the same time.

even though you're surrounded by other people wearing the same medal, how often are you surrounded by a fraction of the population that you are a part of through races?? it's still special. try not to let the size of the fraction keep you from enjoying your accomplishment, even if it the same accomplishment as theirs.

Actually I like the medals hanging around the house. My Girls get a kick out of them.
When anybody comes over they see them and I get to tell them about the event.
It is really fun when the ex-wife sees them, and the kids are telling her about the event.

Mine are sitting on my dresser. I haven't figured out what to do with them yet. I did take my last 2 medals with me when I went on vacation to AZ to show my nieces.
Sometimes at work we have a "What have you done lately" day to get someone pumped up for a race and then we'll all bring in our bibs and medals and put them on display for everyone to see. The next WHYDL day should be right before the LA Marathon (2 coworkers are running it) and I'll have the 2 new ones to show off. :)

I keep mine in an old cigar box. I'm not one for breaking them on special occasions! However, after my first Ironman I returned to State College (PSU), got drunk and wore the finishers medal and t-shirt out to the bars! Hey, chicks love jewelry!

Finishers medals- good question. I wear mine across the line and that's about it. I actually collect all mine and give them to my mom when I see her. She loves it, she used to have them hanging on her treadmill for motivation, but now there are so many she just picks a few to keep on there. It is good that some of you keep them on for periods of time, you worked hard so let people know how you did. I keep my number on my leg for 2 days after each race, bad or good race. It is good, I can be proud if I do well, and if I don't do well it makes me deal with that bad race and get over it. And yes, I do shower, but you know how hard it can be to get those numbers off some times.
P.S. Desiree would get a kick out of you guys and the whole POTM thing.
As for the numbers, part of me doesn't like them as it does bad things to my skin. But I teach martial arts to kids, and used to even teach the afternoon after a morning race, and those kids got in the habit of checking if I had numbers on me. It was really cute :)
And hey BigMatt, you should let her know! It's a great compliment. I love that the people we find attractive are also kickass athletes!
Miles of Life --- Powered by MarkyV
Funny you should mention the numbers. I think that's my sublte way of showing off Monday morning. I shower, but I don't scrub very hard in some areas :)
My rule is to wear the medal until I get back to my hotel (or my car if it's a local race). And then I'll take it off. It is cool to be able to ride the subway for free after Boston or New York :p, but after that I'm pretty happy to bask in my own sense of accomplishment.....but that's just me. :D
Personally I'm not a big medal wearer unless I place in my AG. Handshake with the medal in hand is what I prefer. I do have a wall of fame though. Every race number from every TRI is tacked up in the office with any associated finisher medal or AG award below it.

My few medals/ awards are all together on the bottom shelf of my night stand. I guess there's jsut nothign there I am particularly proud of yet. Like the Dsiney Oly finsher's medaI. (finisher's medal for an OLY?!? yeah, i know, thats what i said. and apparently at the expense of more AG awards, they only awarded the top THREE.)
I DO like my first ever Age group award (4th), but its a beer mug with the logo on it, and it doesnt look good anywhere in the apt. just yet. Hopefully this season I can add a bit more to my collection so it won't be so lonely.

This weekend I went with my husband to Las Vegas to watch him run the Las Vegas Marathon. As do most marathons and many triathlons, they gave out finishers medals. Milling around at the finish most people had their medals on. Makes sense. The remainder of the day we saw many people who kept their medals on after they'd showered up. I wouldn't do it, but I suppose it's not that weird. The next morning at the airport, I was floored as to how many people still had their medals on.How long does one need to wear their medal after the race?
I wear my medals out to nightclubs and stuff... the chics really dig it.
