What was your most memorable race moments of this year? Did you have a breakthrough race or event? Did you cut your time? Compete in very challenging event? This was my first year of multi-sport and road races. The duathlon and triathlon races were very satisfying, because where I could barely circle a H.S track four times without a krispy kreme donut break, (in Feb. '05) and completing these events unlocked the mental walls which kept me on the sidelines. Now, I crave races and events the way that I use to reach for those donuts. Competing has become my drug of choice. I think that this is awesome forum. Share your stories.

This year was my first year of triathlons, so there were quite a few memorable moments. I would say my best though was seeing the supportiveness in other athletes at races. At my first Half Ironman, I went out to hard on the bike. While it got me into 8th spot or something, I paid for it on the run. Almost everyone who passed me on the run said something like "Come on, stay with me, you can do it, just follow my shoes". And while I could never hold on to them for longer than about 500m, it was a huge boost to a pair of very tired legs. These people were not passing me and thinking "Yes, I gained another spot", but instead wanted to see everyone else succeed in doing what they wanted to do....

.....and I would say that is true of 99% of triathletes.....a very different attitude from other sports.

I was pretty happy with my results this year. Beat all my times in races that I did the previous year. Won my first piece of race hardware! Did 3 HIM. All as prep for IM this coming year.
Most challenging races were Spirit of Racine HIM where it was record high heat 117 degree heat index and I improved my time. The other was the HIM at Lake Geneva - Bonked - but pushed through it - gained confidence from that - so much of racing is mental.

Although I didn't get a chance to do any tri's as I had planned, I did get to do some new races and got to work on bringing down my Half mary time. I did the Vancouver half-marathon in early May. Beautiful course, but not a good race for me. I don't think I was ready for it. But it definitely prepared me for my next half mary at the end of May in Penticton, B.C. home to IMC, in which I was able to bring my half mary time down 10 mins from the Vancouver half and 4 mins away from my PB. I also was able to get my 5k times back down to where they were 7 years ago and proved to myself that I can run harder in races despite the upper GI consequences. :)

The race that was newest and had the most unchartered territory for me was the Seattle To Portland Bike ride. This was my first organized ride and the longest I had ever ridden before in two days, not to mention ever. It was a fun ride and I was able to break through a mental wall. Can't wait to be done with school so that I can get back out there and get some more tri's under my belt. Goal for this coming year is do some oly's.

What I remember the most of last season is the 9 months training for my first IM. I can tell you to detail every race, ride, run, and swim in preparation to the event. IM kept me motivated all year and the result was a thrilling awesome race.

2005 was the year I really got into triathlon. I started in March of 04, but wasn't super excited about it. I got the bug late in 04 and trained pretty hard in 05. I improved my 2 sprint times and now hold a pr of 1:08 for the sprint (didn't have a grat day either) and a 2:22 for olympic distance. Nowadays i eat, sleep and drink triathlon (no joke). It's really all I think about. I now have my eye set on a HIM on 06, maybe 2, and hopefully an IM in 07. I'm in it for life.

2005 was a really memorable race season for me...I just started running 4.5 years ago at the age of 44 and discovered that I had a natural aptitude for distance running. I've run seven marathons and several halfs and shorter distance road races since then. This season I set my marathon PR (3:24:57) and tied my half thon PR (1:35:27) But even more exciting for me was that it was my first triathlon season! I managed to win my AG in my first sprint and was hooked!
I knew the Oly distance would be more challenging because I just started swimming last winter.
My goal was to finish an Oly in under 3 hrs and I did it in my second one in August.
I am registered for a spring marathon and 2 half IM's so far next season. I am now 49. I am hoping to work my way up to the IM distance in 2007 to celebrate being 50.
Another cool factor is that one of my sons is a marathoner and triathlete too and we travel to races together. It's great!
