I'm looking for a good swimming goggle/mask for training and would like to know what would you guys recommend? Maybe an Aqua Sphere or the Tyr Aquashield?

for training, sweedish googles or tyr socket rocket. Once you try those you'll never want to go back to gasket ones.

I use the TYR Velocity. Tried the socket rockets and they just didn't fit my face, leaked all the time. It took me a few goggle purchases before I found one that was comfortable and leak free.

I would recommend the aqua sphere kaiman as well. They are comfortable, leak free and enable great sightlines which I find particularly important in open water.

Here is another strong vote for the Aqua Sphere Kaiman.

I have a relatively small face, so I actually use the Kaiman Small (jr.). This size also works very well for several women triathletes that I know. The Kaiman is the ONLY goggle that I've ever been able to achieve a water tight seal without getting a pressure headache. The Kaiman creates a seal with very little pressure. It is just a very comfortable and effective goggle. Visibilty is exceptional. Overall this is FAR AND AWAY, the best swimming goglle that I've ever used.

I have used the AquaSphere XP for about a year. The don't leak until the wear out. Give it a try. I just bought a pair of the Kaiman's to try out, but the XP's were the first goggle that I liked, that fit my face and more important - didn't hurt my face when on. Give them a try.

Guys, can you wear glasses under the Seal XP goggles, ie, swim with glasses on?

Nope, it would break the seal. For us contact wearing folks, we need some inventor to come up with something. Nothing worse than a leaky goggle and contacts. Sucks big time.

I wish I could find a pair of goggles that I could tape in a pair of lenses from old glasses INTO. Right now I duct tape a pair of old glasses (lenses) without arms to the outside of the goggles. It seems to work well for sighting but looks REAL geeky.

BBB. Try Kiefer. They sell optical goggles.

For pool training – Lane 4 Revolution Goggles, really comfy infinitely adjustable nose bridge. I wear contacts and these very seldom leak.
For racing / open water swimming – Aqua Sphere Kaiman Goggles. A little larger, better peripheral vision. I have a pair of Aqua Sphere Seals, but seem to be overkill to me. I like them in the ocean though whenever I am at the beach.

BBB - I switched to daily disposable contacts. They are soooooo much easier to deal with for swimming and racing. I think they are a little bigger in the diameter so they stay in great even when water gets in my goggles. I also found that I can wear them for 3 to 5 days if I store them properly so they end up not being too expensive.

The only prob I have with contacts is my eyes get REALLY dry and even if I wear them for the swim I can't wear'em for the bike or run. Just make my eyes too dry. For IMC I wore no glasses OR contacts till I got to the tent and my eyes are prety bad. I just put the glasses on for the bike and run.

Thanks, but until I find some goggles that will let me wear the glasses "inside" somehow I will keep doing what I am doing. I guess a diving mask would not be too aero/hydro dynamic in the water huh? C'est la vie!

Optical (prescription) goggles are not an option?

Try Ciba Vision Night & Day contacts. Most contacts are 40-60% breathable. The Night & Day contacts are 98% breathable. They are designed to be slept in as well. I wear mine 24 hours a day for 45 - 60 days without changing them. I have to put a drop of saline in each eye in the morning, but other than that they feel great. Great to swim in, bike, etc.

Ciba has the patent on these. A few years ago Bosch came out with their "Purevision" lenses that were the same concept but then Ciba brought an infringement suit and purevision was taken off the market. So, there is not anything else out there on the market like them.

I guess they could be, but it's more $ spent. Ciba is expensive here, I have looked into it. Since I have been able to overcome things so far and feel so comfy with the way I do things now the $ is the big deal. There are bigger priorities for me. BTW, in addition, already have probs. with the sig. other saying I spend too much on tris and this would be another "thing". It would be hard to get her to agree since I already have been able to cope with things. :)

Brazilian,

The AS XP's are the best I have ever used. I just bought the Kaimen and tried them today, but I like the XP. I am all about comfort, and these are the most comfortable.

I wear both TYR and Speedo optical prescription goggles and they work great for me. I keep them on after the swim until I get to my bike where I can switch them out with my prescription sunglasses. The optical prescription goggles are cheap too so they don't cost any more than non-prescription goggles (around $20) so I can keep a couple of backups without breaking the bank.

Another vote for Aqua Sphere Kaimans. I have somewhat deep-set eyes and it took me a while to find a google that fit comfortably and sealed well. The Kaimans seem to do th trick.

Hey bluebirdbiker,

I bought them last week and used it two times. The goggles are really great. No fog at all.
The only thing I'm trying to do is finding a better way to fit the goggles with the swim cap (it's a little different then regular goggles).

Brazilian,

On the XP's and swim cap. Put the goggles on first, then put your swim cap over your head (duh?) and over the straps. This way the seal will not break, plus if you are racing you can protect from losing your goggles. XP's are great, I like the visual, especially in open water.

Probably a dumb question:

Do you buy your goggles online or do you make sure to try them on first? I've noticed there's not much selections at my local tri shops.

Thanks

Oh, guys. Tried the XPs out last night first time. I really like'em. Thanks for the suggestions. Usually after swimmin' an hour or more I have this pain over the eyebrow and under the eyes from regular goggles but these things were awsome. The mask just sucks to the face and hugs the head. I am sold on these babies.

Well I just ordered a pair of the XP's as well - should be here beginning of the week. I've always had problems getting a good seal - hope these work - I have quite a collection of ones that leak!

I don't use a cap for just daily swimming but I did try them in the pool with one cause you guys have been talking about it. I just folded the cap up over the brow then put the goggles on like normal. Worked fine.

How are they after your in the water and then take them off and then put them back on? I have a pair of the seal mask goggles and they leak like crazy after my face is wet. As long as I put them on my dry face and leave them on they work fine, but once the gasket gets wet they don't seal at all.

No probs what so ever Tim. The other good thing is that they don't fog up like regular goggles. The other REALLY good thing about them is the wide vision you have. REALLY good cause you can watch your hands and form under water better. That's another benefit of these babies.
