Hi! I have done several years of distance running/marathoning. I just started the triathlon this past season (sprints and olys). In addition to two marathons, my 2006 schedule includes 2 half IM's and some shorter races.
My longterm tentative goal is to compete in a full IM in 2007. I thought I read somewhere in one of the forum threads that people are already registering for 2007 because the races fill so quickly?? Is it true that some of the IM are already accepting 2007 registration? I doubt it, but maybe I am missing something...
Anyway, how about some feedback regarding first IM's...I am driveable to Lake Placid (I know that it's a bear), and I am also willing to travel. Also, would you recommend early, mid, or late season? I live in northeast PA. I run outside year round but of course outdoor cycling and OW swims will, for the most part, have to wait til spring. I have a tri coach and I will certainly be discussing this decision with her, but I like to hear a variety of opinions. Thanks gang!

Most of the races fill right up for the following year on line when registration opens the day after that years event. So for example IM Florida filled up for 2006 right after the race a couple of weeks ago. For IM Canada you have to register in person the day after the race (or have someone register you --in person) -- this too fills up within hours. I don't know about onsite registration at any of the other locations, but I assume they have it there too. Some races like IM AZ and CDA don't fill up as quickly I have noticed.

Thanks brittda! I will have to be really vigilant when the time comes. Do you have any race recommendations?

Well, depends on things. My first IM was Canada, which has a pretty tough bike course. But if you train hills you will be fine. Its only one loop so you dont get bored doing multiple loops. The run is an "out and back" along the lake. The course is beautiful, the support is evern better and it is an all around great race. It will also be my next one. I have heard that the others are well run also. CDA has a flate bike course , but multiple loops (think 2) so does Florida. USA (Lk Placid is hilly. Friends who have done both USA and Canada have told me Canada is harder, but that is just second hand)

Other things to consider: time of year. Arizona and CDA are earlier in the season USA, Canada, WI, and FL are later. So, depending on where you train this may matter. Arizona for me might be hard, since the colder months limit longer rides to some extent.

Also registration. I can show up in Penticton to register or CDA as well , pretty easily. This would be hard for me to do though for USA. Just a few things to consider.

Scout

The Ironman North America page has a cool tool that lets you compare the course profiles:

By the way IMFL is one loop. I've done Florida, Canada and Hawaii: Florida is fast and flat, Canada is a bit hilly and Hawaii is hot and windy. I agree with Brittda, IM Canada is a great race, and if you can train on hills to prepare (and can get in...), do it. Otherwise, all the other IM North America races are good too, the important thing is to enjoy the journey getting there and the experience.

Good luck,

TK

Thanks TK! That is a cool tool! I agree...so much of this challenge is about the journey...
