Am I Ready?
You are correct, only you can answer that. I did IMC this last August after only completing 4 Sprint tri's though .I had done many marathons before that, and have a competitive swimming background so the only real "unknown" was the bike. A girlfriend said she was going up to sign up and did I want to do it too? "Why not" I figured, and so I did. You can do anything if you put your mind to it and train properly.
Key words from brittda: train properly
I have been doing tri's for 1 year, and am signed up to do IMWI in September. It gives me an entire year to focus my training on Ironman. I will do other races, but only as training for this one. I get the impression that Ironman isn't something you can half-ass your way through, you have to be committed; but if you are committed then I think anyone can do anything.
Bottom line: if you want to and are determined to put the in the training that the event requires, then yes I think you are ready. If you don't think you are ready to put in that time commitment, put it off for another year or so. You want to give it your best shot.
Brian
I dunno if anyone is ever truly ready for a first IM. Being that this is my first too, I can't answer that --- until later - and I took a longer approach to preparing myself for the IM. I worked up through several years - this past season I did 3 HIM's plus a bunch of Oly's and sprints.
You are right in that it is a decision only you can answer.
Brian really hits on it, that committment is the key. With that then you will put in the training required to prepare you for the IM. One of the IM mantras is to Respect the Distance.
You also need the commitment not only from yourself, but from your family and such to support and put up with all the long hours of training.
If you want it - then you can do it.
"It's so physically demanding that ironically, it comes down to who's the smartest"-Peter Reid
Training is key to prepare your body, but if you don't have it in your head you'll defeat yourself.
I am doing IM Florida this weekend.
I didn't always have it as a goal.
I started running in February 2003 and m y first goal was to finish a 5k.
The goal for that year was to do a marathon.
I have slowly built myself up physically and built up my confidence by doing more difficult events.
I started with sprint tri's then olympic, then 1/2 IM, Now I think I am ready to go for an Ironman.
I did all of the events individually so I know I can do the distances. That is the known.
Now I just have to do them all at once. That is the unknown, which makes it exciting.
I don't have a goal time but I plan to finish.
I also plan to show my kids the finishers medal when I get home.

Thanks for the vote of confidence.
I am just aiming to finish.
If I accidentally surpass my goal and qualify for Kona, then I'll get all cocky. :D
Look at the history of those who approached IM with arrogance. It blew up in their face.
I don't want to talk all kinds of trash, and then bonk.

Oh boy, if you qualify for Kona I will so kill you! :D

Well If I do, then I can have a good laugh, and it will motivate you to work harder to get that qualifying slot.
If I don't , then I can always say I didn't want to make you feel bad about not qualifying so I slowed down to make you look good. ;)

k, sounds like a plan :D Good luck anyways. You'll do fine.

IM Florida is held In Panama City Beach.
I have heard that the town really supports the event.
I have also heard of bikini clad supporters along the route.
It will be in the lower 80's on Saturday.
A little eye candy never hurt anyone. ;)

IM Florida is held In Panama City Beach.I have heard that the town really supports the event.
I actually heard the opposite. I remember hearing rumors that it was going to be cancelled after 2005. I contacted the folks that put on the event and everything got sorted out. Semantics, I know, but I was wondering if anyone else heard that?
Ya, you gotta get the tattoo dude.
BBB
If I ever finish one, I know I am getting the tatoo !!!!!!
At 20 miles of the run in the Ironman we ask ourselves why we do this. At mile 140.6, it all becomes perfectly clear.
What is the tattoo? and how do i get mine, haha. Seriously though what;s it look like?

My pic is floating around here somewhere. I have mine on the bottom of my right calf a few inches above my heel. It is the M-Dot about 1 1/2. I got it there so it is above my running sock. So others behind me can see it at an event.

I have been planning on the idea of doing an Ironman in 2007, either CDA or Germany. I have thought I might push it up to doing IMFL 2006. Here's a little background: I started about 1.5 years ago in triathlon. I've done a few sprints and 2 olympic distance races. I am currenlty in the base phases of training for a Half IM in March of 2006. I guess my question is: Am I Ready? I have a feeling, it's only something I can answer, but do you any of you have any hints, tips or ideas, that would be very helpful. Thanks
