Ok, showing my complete ignorance. I understand you have to display your number the whole time of the race. How does this work from the swim to the bike to the run, and do I need to buy a race belt?

No you do not NEED to buy a race belt whereas if you do it is easier to cycle and run with. In each race package they provide pins to clip the number on the shirt, so you do not need a race belt, but it's easier WITH one. You just have to wear the number while biking and running; on the back while biking and front while running (at least at the finish line). The race belt makes that easier cause you can turn it around and there are no pins to potentially rip the shirt. Whle swimming it is not necessary although people put the race baelt on with the number under the wetsuit so to save time during T1. They also make your arms and legs with the same number using a black marker.

You do not need to wear your number on the swim. You have body markings for that, but the wetsuit covers those anyway. Some races will have helmet and bike numbers - and may or may not require the number to be worn. All will require that you wear the number for the run portion - usually in front so the cameras can see it - so they can sell you some photos - and announce you as you cross the line. A race belt is a good idea. I will often wear mine the entire time - just put the belt on under the wetsuit and forget about it - one less task in transition.

I got a race belt after my first tri to make things easier.
During my second tri I left my race belt in transition and was jst getting on the bike when I realized it.

From my 3rd tri on I have worn it under my wetsuit.

as far as i know you dont have to wear the number on the bike, just on the run. if its a sprint i use the pins and attach to my tri shorts ( red thong ) and roll it up so its underneath. then when i get to the run i take it out. the race number.

Some races have different rules regarding race numbers. Make sure you read the rules that you get with your race packet and pay attention when they give the pre-race instructions.
Last race I did they wanted the number to be in front for the bike and the run. Which was kinda stupid because you could not see it on the bike being in the aero-position anyway.
I agree with the others, a race belt is not required, but is well worth the $7 to make things easier. Hey. Why don't we have Trifuel racebelts?

Random piece of advice that I read somewhere (here?): Whenever attaching your race number to either your belt or jersey, make sure to crumple it up beforehand. This way, it'll attach easier to your equipment and won't flap in the wind (or nearly as much otherwise).

FYI- Pre- wash new belts.

My brand new racebelt left a nice red stain on my new tri-suit. :(

After washing I didn't have a problem but the suit is stained for good.

Is it just my race belt but I have yet to get a number that actually fits the poppers that I have on the belt..... I always just end up attaching the number with the pins. Or am I missing something?

If you have the kind with the snaps they don't go thru the holes.

You just lay the race number over the snaps,
and snap the buttons so the tyvek is stuck in the snap/

Yeah I tried that but it kinda didn't work that well, just made a complete mess of the number and didn't seem particularly secure....the pins work fine for me!!

I have a single hole punch (which you can get at an office supply store)
and punch my own holes the correct distance apart.

Then I use my snappy race belt.

I do the rolling the number up in a ball thing too.
