ALS is the disease that everyone knows as Lou Gerig's Disease. Steven Hawking's has it. It's a very interesting, but hugely debilitating disease. It gradually takes away one's ability to move from the feet up, but still allows one to feel aches and pains in the legs and the rest of the body. It eventually reaches the lungs and the diaphram and makes it impossible to live without a ventilator.
A fellow triathlete who was diagnosed with this disease this past winter is taking on Kona this weekend! Very inspirational guy!
