Cool weather race question

The weather is supposed to change just in time for the sprint race I have been getting ready for (Henlopen.) The ocean temp today is 71 so that should not change much in the next 4 days. Overnight lows in the 40s race starts at 9 am. Highs in the mid 60s later on. I will be wearing a 1 piece tri suit over a sports bra.

Here come the silly questions.....

Do multiple caps help keep your head warm on the swim (1/4 mile)
What do I put on for the bike over a wet tri suit?

By the run, I should be OK, I can addjust layers at the transition and it should be warmer by then.

Thanks for the help,
Denise

A neoprene swim cap to give some warmth - I've seen people just wear multiple caps as well. But with those water temps - shouldn't really be needed.
Not sure if applicable with the ocean - but I have done lake swims where the water temp was still warm, but the air temp was in the 40's. That caused a lot of steam to come off the lake and made siting a little more difficult.
In mine I just biked in the wet trisuit in the cold - if a longer race then I'd look to throw on a jacket to cut the wind chill. maybe gloves if really cold.
Have a good race!

Yeah, 71 for the water temp is pretty warm, so you shouldn't have a problem on the swim. I don't know if you already have, but you should maybe get out there once before the race and try swimming in it.

As for the bike, I would say, dry yourself off a little before you get on, get rid of as much excess water as your can (especially in your hair)

Good luck, let us know how it goes.

At least with the later start it may have time to warm up a little, it's been pretty nice around here lately by 9 or so. Though if they're right about the rain we may just have to ride and run wet.

I'm racing in the du, so good luck and maybe I'll see you there.

another bike thought is arm warmers that you could add after the swim.

Dry off as much as possible,
bring a jacket or arm warmers and maybe a pair of tights and some gloves.
I would definitely wear socks too. Keep your feet warm.

Have it in transition and if it is warm you don't use it.
Just be prepared.

For IMLP last year the water temp was 72 an the air temp on race morning was 47. You won't need another cap for the swim. As for the bike it is just going to be a little chilly till you dry off. I wore some arm warmers and knee warmers till the temp came up.

Thanks for all of the ideas. At the risk of sounding silly, are arm and leg warmers someting you get at the bike store?

All good advice waterbaby...especially the arm warmers...just go like hell on the bike...your heat will come up! By the time you get to the run you'll be wishin' it was cooler.
Good luck!
