The jaibreak triathlon is a little different than your usual tri.You start by canoeing 3 miles,then mountain biking 8 miles,then a 2.5 mile trail run.
This was my third tri and nearly marked the 1 year anniversary of me quitting smoking and getting in shape.
134 teams signed up so they started the canoes in waves.My partner and I were in the 3rd wave and before you knew it ,it was time for us to go.With about 29 other canoes on the starting line we were all side by side.The horn went off and we were gone.It was mass chaos for a little while then everyone spread out and we got in our rythem.The canoe portion took about 42 minutes and my arms were very tired.Out of the canoe and up a short hill to the mountain bikes.Transition was about 45 seconds.
Out on the bike trail I started catching people pretty quickly but passing was a little harder because it was tight single track.About the first 3 miles it felt like we were hardly going then the first open field we came to I was able to get around 5 people.From then on it seemed like I caught everyone else at a good time and was able to get around them easily.
Off the bike and starting to run.It was getting very hot at this point,about 85 degrees and 90 percent humidity and I was hurting.My pace wasn't as quick as I hoped but I kept going ,singing Doors songs in my head.Then with a half mile to go I picked up the pace and finish strong but very tired.
My teammate finished 2 minutes behind me and we placed 12th out of 55 male teams.I was hoping for a top ten but maybe next year.
All in all it was alot of fun and I am very glad I did it.Total time 1:56
