International Distance Tri - Nutiritonal needs

I am doing an International Distance Tri this weekend - I ahve done many Sprints but this will be my first International distance - I am relatively competetive in the Sprints so want to do my best at this distance as well. My question is when and where to drink.

There is a bottle drop off about half way through the bike course - does this mean they will hand me another FULL bottle or is this something else.

Should I drink primarily on the bike and if so I would think 1.5 to 2 bottle would be plenty for about an hours ride.

What about in the transition - does anyone use a bottle there to grab a quick drink before the run.

Finally is it worth putting socks on - I do not for Sprints but have started to feel some rubbing starting just at the end of a Sprint 5k run so maybe I should - probably a 10 second cost in time?

Thanks

Take 3 bottles. Just in case. I normally use one bottle per 15- 20 miles. I was glad I had decied to take 3 on sunday. I don't like to depend on the race for anything on the bike, I like to be self sufficient. The race had a water stop just outsde of T2, so I didnt need another bottle in T2 for that. I used socks, and was glad I did. I was feeling some hot spots even with my socks.

This was my first race at the Oly distance, so take my advice with a grain of salt. Have fun, it's pretty painful!

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

Whether they give you a new bottle is something that is characteristic to that particular event. Check with race coord. to see if bottles are handed out or if you have to bring your own. Generally you do not get bottle in this short an event; 1/2IM and IM you do. If you want to drink it's up to you. I carry a water bottle and a strong gatorade on the bike during olys. The length in this kind of tri is usually not more than 1.5hrs. (depends on your speed, of course) so, what ever you do in training for that period of time, do it for the race. In T2 I ususally have a "throw away bottle" of gatorade by the shoes I drink from as I get my shoes on. As I start running I take what I need and throw it away. It's so concentrated with sugar that I get that "pasty" taste in the mouth by the time I hit the aid station and so, wash things down w a water at the first station. This bottle is ususally filled with a concentrated gatorade sol'n to give me that "boost" at the start of the run. Also you might want to try a caffine gel in T2 as you start the run to give you a boost.

Ahh, socks. There have been many threads on this one. Check in the search engine of the forum, I won't go there.

I usually try to not carry too much extra fluids. Carrying 3 or more is a lot of weight....
Sometimes at the shorter distances (Oly) they will hand out bottles of water or Gatorade ... not actual water bottles with water or Gatorade in them - so those can be a bit of a pain to handle. Assuming you can get them open - those work best if you have an areo (Profile Design) water bottle - so you can quickly dump the contents and toss the bottle.

Usually drink heavy at the end of the bike, so as to not slow down T2 by drinking in transition.

Socks? Ahh, we love talking going sockless... (have blisters: wear socks, else not)

Socks definitely socks, Wapner in 10 minutes, Wapner in 10 minutes, definitely socks,...

I take a Power gel about 15 minutes before the swim.

I go with 2 16 0z bottle on the bike. Both have Amino Vital and Carbo Pro mix.
In transition I have a bottle of water.

For the run I might take another gel and drink what they have on the run route if I need it.

Nothing to it, but to do it

I did my first two oly's this summer and this is what I did and truly believe that I have the most finicky stomach system of anybody in the world....

Breakfast about 3 hrs before (I like honey nut cherios with skim milk (amazingly doesn't give me problems)... I need something clean burning with some protein so I'm not hungry again in 5 min). I drink accelerade and also snack on sugar candy or marshmallows or something until 1 hour before the start. Then switch to water.
A gel about 10-15 min before start
Drink 2 full waterbottles of water with nuun tablets (which have been there for a while so there's no fizz) on the bike...
2 gels early and mid ride on the bike

On my first oly, the run was fine, maybe I should have had another gel, but I know I can't tolerate any calories near my stomach running (something I'm working on because I know I need to change that to do anything longer)
On the 2nd one, I was feeling miserable on the run because of the wrong food the night before (still working on that one) and it took about 15 min longer and that was longer enough that i totally ran out of energy before the finish...
So at that effort level 3 gels +stored carbs gets me through 2:30, but not 2:45...

I didn't use socks and it worked fine - felt that if I ever ran much longer I would want them though.

Did my first olay this summer and drank 1.5 bottles on the bike. That was definitely enough for me, but it depends on your sweat rate and the weather! Try the powerbar nutrition calculator when you are not sure.
Socks is a must have in my opinion.
I only ate one gel and drank pure water. Hitting the 5k mark on the run I felt so hungry I grapped a musli bar and some coke. Eating was on my mind and I did not care about the seconds. In the end, it slows you down even more when you only think about eating. I would not have been able to run another 5k with thinking about cereals and stuff only. (To scare you all: I did not try coke not musli bars in training!!! LOL)
Have fun, stay tuned and remember that it takes some time for fuel to be absobed by your body

I take down about 700 - 800 cals for pre-race.
Then when setting up in transition etc. take in sports drink.
Then 30 min prior switch to water. 15 min prior take in a gel and more water.
So that is about 1000 cals before the race starts. Which works well for me (6' 2" @169 lbs)
On the bike have 1 water and 1 sports drink.
Take a gel with water if needed on the bike.
Take in lots of fluid over the last few miles on the bike as you spin out your legs.
Then take some water on the run as needed. Shouldn't have to eat anymore.

Jcody,

Sounds like you're doing the Pinehurst race? Me too. I think they give you a water bottle half way through the bike (water only). I've heard it's a well run, well supported race. I'll be the one on the Bianchi road bike, slugging up the hills. Have fun and good luck!!
