Can anyone clue me in why Kiawah is soooo expensive. I just thought, hey, I'll leave the three kids with the grand parents take the wife (cheerleader) for a nice romantic marathon weekend.
$70.00 entry?????? $500-$1000 two night stay?????
It looks beautiful and we love the coast. Is there any place to stay that is more reasonable on the island?
This will be my first marathon for my wife and I and I want it to be special, but unfortunately the wallet may not let us do it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am not sure about hotels in the area but $70 for an entry is quite reasonable as far as marathon registration goes. Gets expensive especially if there is more than one of you (my husband does marathons with me as well...so far he hasn't been bitten by the tri bug but is going to give it a whirl next year, since he says he wants to do IMC with me in 07)

Kiawah Island is near Charleston, SC. I lived in Charleston for about a year. From what I rem it is about a 30 min drive from charleston. Maybe you could think about looking in west ashley area in charleston for a hotel or an area called john's island there may be a bed and breakfast or something nt sure though. John's island is a pretty small place West ashley is little bigger. If you find anything on 526 that would be easy on off toward the race.

There are only 2 choices to stay on the island - The Sanctuary ($$$$$) or the villas. I got a 2 bedroom villa for marathon weekend for $150/night. There is a 2 night minimum. You can stay off island but you won't be able to drive on to the island the morning of the race. You will have to take a ferry. And I think the ferry may only be for runners-not sure. Not sure what's available off island/

Those numbers do not seem very expensive to me...

My brother lives in charleston and will probably do Kiawah again this year...

Good luck finding something on the Island that is cheaper than 150/nite...

It is the going rate for accomodations in the area..
