HEALTH QUESTION & ANSWER SESSION WITH A NON-TRIATHLETE

Q. I've heard that cardiovascular exercise can prolong life. Is this true?
A: Your heart is only good for so many beats, and that's it... don't waste them on exercise. Everything wears out eventually. Speeding up your heart will not make you live longer; that's like saying you can extend the life of your car by driving it faster. Want to live longer? Take a nap.

Q: Should I cut down on meat and eat more fruits and vegetables?
A: You must grasp logistical efficiencies. What does a cow eat? Hay and corn. And what are these? Vegetables. So a steak is nothing more than an efficient mechanism of delivering vegetables to your system. Need grain? Eat chicken. Beef is also a good source of field grass (green leafy vegetable). And a pork chop can give you 100% of your recommended daily allowance of vegetable products........ Duh!

Q: Should I reduce my alcohol intake?
A: No, not at all. Wine is made from fruit. Brandy is distilled wine, that means they take the water out of the fruity bit so you get even more of the goodness that way. Beer is also made out of grain. Bottoms up! Geez!

Q: What do you think is a good way to calculate ones body/fat ratio?
A: Well, if you have a body and you have body fat, your ratio is one to one. If you have two bodies, your ratio is two to one, etc. Is this HARD??

Q: What are some of the advantages of participating in a regular exercise program?
A: Can't think of a single one, sorry. My philosophy is: No Pain...Good

Q: Aren't fried foods bad for you?
A: YOU'RE NOT LISTENING!!!. Foods are fried these days in vegetable oil. In fact, they're permeated in it. How could getting more vegetables be bad for you?

Q: Will sit-ups help prevent me from getting a little soft around the middle?
A: Definitely not! When you exercise a muscle, it gets bigger. You should only be doing sit-ups if you want a bigger stomach.

Q: Is chocolate bad for me?
A: Are you crazy? HELLO ...... Cocoa beans ... another vegetable!!! It's the best feel-good food around!

Q: Is swimming good for your figure?
A: If swimming is good for your figure, explain whales to me. Hmmm?

Q: Is getting in-shape important for my lifestyle?
A: Hey! 'Round' is a shape!

Non-Triathletes True belief. Is there some logic to this?

Remember:
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Chardonnay in one hand - strawberries in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and screaming . WOO HOO! What a Ride!"

What are we doing to yourselves!!!

Hey, great idea!
I can't wait for the Gatorade Chardonnay electro-lyte replacement drink and the Deep-fried Clif Bars.

Yummy.

There's this guy at the rec centre here who only comes in for a relaxing half hour in the steam room and he shakes his head at Norm, whose shoulder bothers him a little with his 2km swim each day, me with my achilles tendinitis from running and playing hoops, and Sheila whose lower back gets her on rainy days from years of downhill skiing and mountain biking.
He says, "Hey guys, I sit on the couch with a brewski watching Monday Night Football, never break a sweat between steam baths, and I ain't got a pain in my body. What part of my "sleep and grow fat pleasurably" plan don't you get? Ya wanna live forever?"

Some days I think he has a point.

I live with these comments each day Geoff. My wife is lucky in that she never has to lift a finger and is skinny. She does however walk each day for 2-3km. but nowhere does anything to the extent we do. Her life style is sloth city. The one who eats well and has the lowest metabolism wins. I think she is right.

What about those of us that are still blessed with that metabolism yet subject ourselves to this pounding??? I agree with beads. We are all a little masochistic

"lowest metabolism?" Surely if you eat well and have a low (or slow) metabolism, you put on weight because your metabolic rate isn't burning up the calories.

I conclude therefore that if someone who is skinny, eats well, they have a HIGH or FAST metabolism.

Just for the record..

Geoff

Oh, and BRITT and LK? If you want to kick up your metabolic rate, look into Circuit Training.

Brittda -- I know what you mean about it just not always mattering how much you eat and how much you workout... there are *some* sympathetic eyes out here!

PoC -- Circuit training? As in, do an exercise, move to another, then another, lather rinse repeat? What kind of exercises do you throw in? I looked some on Google but was seeing a few different styles...

I know how much I should eat--have done WW before so its not that.... I guess I am just "lucky"

I think it is the concept of exercise moving to another that is the cicuit,
not necessarily the exercise itself.

Ok... but how long on each one? Is this like brick style? bike and run? or with weights? I just figure if there is something that helps metabolism I might as well try it... besides, I'm looking to spice up my workout program right now =)

Kylie,

I wonder if he means like the workout they have at 24hr. They have some weight machines set aside in a circle. You go through the "circuit" twice, I think, working out on the exercise bike between. I think they have time and rep guidance posted. And I think one of the trainers will take you thru it the first time (if available). It would be an easy way for you to get into weights. And once you outgrow it, you can move on to the free weights & other machines.

I thought that that circuit was a "fake workout" like the whole "Curves" studios. I guess it is really all in how you approach it though, and if you really push yourself or just call it a workout 'cause of where it is. Worth a try... :)

This is circuit training too, done with machines, or even free weights
Boxers do a circuit training with shadow boxing, sit ups, push ups and jumping rope.
I have seen circuit runs at some college campus' too. you runt the trail around the campus and stop at the circuit stations, Pull up bars, sit up incline bench,..etc.
Combining the exercises, changes the muscle groups you use.

I think it depends on how hard you workout and keeping your heart rate up during it. I think the Curves thing is too social, too "easy", and too restricted and that's why it doesn't seem like a workout for us.

I think 'Curves' is more entry level, aimed at women who want to start working out and have limited time and are intimidated by other gyms.

I don't think it is aimed for you Tri Chicks. You guys are tough cookies

Yeah, well.
I started circuit training in 1978 and still haven't outgrown them. Depending on your goals, you can train to build mass and strength, lose or gain weight, and tone your muscles. Aerobic conditioning is the bonus.

In one of his books, Arnold (the Guv) brags about lifting 60 tons in some of his workouts.
Me, too. And although it might take me twice as many sets, I do it in half the time.

Nowadays, I don't need any extra strength or size, so I keep both my reps and sets relatively high --- no less than 3 to 5 sets of 12 to 15 (or more) reps per exercise. Throw in some time on a treadmill, eliptical machine and/or rollers (or stationary bike), and you get a great aerobic workout that also maintains or builds strength. Heavier weights with lower reps (maybe pyramiding 12, 10, 8, for example) would be more geared for strength-building.

I haven't seen the studies regarding the effects of weight-lifting on basal metabolism, and wonder about the applicability and relevance to hard-working triathletes.

I think is a good recomendation.

Although, I started weight lifting with a personal trainer who happened to be an olympic 4x400 relay medalist in the Atlanta olympics, for 4 months (Oct - Jan) for a good strength base, then in February I started focusing more on my Swim/Bike/Run. Of course this lasted from February - Sept and hasn't stopped because I have a marathon planned this weekend..

After all this.. I have lost no weight. If training for an IM doesn't do it. I'm not sure what will!

There are several ways to use a "circuit."
What Lisa (Vollenda) describes is the typical introductory routine that spas, gyms, use to get people started safely.

You can do it with a 2 minute rest between and it's akin to a typical weight workout, however,
To kick up the metabolism, do the following:

Find 6-8 exercises you can do with skill and safety,
- work out the order so that you do not use the same muscle groups in succession, eg. alternate upper body, lower body, as in for example:

push ups
sit ups (crunches)
squat thrusts
dumb bell curls
jumping jacks
dumbbell shoulder presses
lunges
leg raises
shuttle runs (say, 10metres)

do each one for 20-30 secs as vigorously as possible, so choose the weights wisely. Safety first!
Move from one to the next quickly so as not to let the heart rate drop,
repeat 2-3 circuits.

The general idea is to be anaerobic for the duration, therefore we need to change muscle groups every 20-30 secs or muscle fatigue will be the limiting factor. We want you to be out-of-breath!
This will limit the number of circuits you can do. Adjust weights and exercise duration to keep the heart rate high and you on the border of asphyxia. Done right it is very intense, so warm up thoroughly and stretch well, we are not trying to injure ourselves here.

when you can do 3 circuits fairly easily, move up to doing 4. Increase resistance as necessary but not before you have done 2-3 weeks of circuits 3 times a week.

Do this for a couple of weeks every now and then. Power sports athletes do this during pre-season. Tri-athletes can do it as necessary to give the metabolism a boost. THe elevated metabolic effect will stay with you for a day or two. It is the opposite of LSD work but is so brief (15 mins 3x weekly) that it won't hurt your regular workout.

This whole thing need take no more than 15-18 minutes after warming up.
You may substitute the use of weight machines if it fits your workout environment. The above list is from a British Army manual for training boxers. I've done it and it burns! Of course, you get out of it what you put into it.
