Its getting to the time of year, where I need to start thinking about what bike trainer I am going to buy.

Any recommendations? I heard the fluid ones are the best, but they seem pricey. Are they worth it? Or is Mag perfectly fine?

Thanks for your help.

I have a Blackburn fliud.

It is sweet. Tried a mag burner but will stick with the fluid. My recommendation is, spent the $ and get a good one. You will NOT regret it.

I ride a Cycleops Fluid 2. Gets a lot of use since I train in the dark hours of the morning most times. Great trainer. Definitely a good investment.

I got a Trek fluid trainer a couple of year ago and it works pretty good. Nothing fancy.

I have a Cycleops Fluid 2 as well, and although have only used it a few times at this point I like it. It does wear through tires though (as I've been told most trainers do because of increased friction and heat) so if you have an older tire to throw on the back it is a good idea.

There is much more discussion on which trainers are good at http://www.trifuel.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2145.

Oh and one of my favorite trainer tricks? Instead of another $10-20 for the block to raise your front tire, use a phone book! Perfect size, and most people have an extra 1 (or 2 or 3) lying around).

I got my cyclops front block at a garage sale for $1.00

Woman said he son moved out and left some junk around and didn't know what is was.

I told her what it was and maybe if her son still rode his bike that he might need it.

She said her son now works in NYC never calls and is a big slob now.

When I was leaving I saw a guy loading the kids Cycle ops trainer into the car.

Don't piss off mom, she'll sell your stuff

i finally picked up a trainer this summer, the blackburn fluid. and kyillee's suggestion about the book is right on. but since i recycled all my phone books, i've been using microsoft's access97 developer's handbook and place the wheel somewhere near the chapter on creating user entry forms.

:D

I have the Cycleops Fluid 2. If you have to use a trainer, it is a good one. I also do the "phonebook thing" for the front wheel. Guess I am not the only one :)

I made something more permanent. Took a piece of wood, cause it's not here now, I think it's about 1ft x 1ft and 2-3 in high, hammered 2 2in x 2in wood strips onto it. You place the tire between them for stability. Here is a jpeg posted.

If you are a bit handy and have a circular saw you can get 3, 1x1 blocks of 2 by 12 glue them together, screw at the corners and clamp.Let it set 24 hours.
Then you can use your circular saw and set it at 1/2, 1, and 1 1/2 inch depths.

Set up similar to the cycle ops block. Sand smooth, paint if you want.

It is all about the whole process of creating something.

And if you are a Handy-Person it is a good way to justify having tools and scraps of wood around the house that you never throw away. :D

Thanks guys, I was pretty much looking at the Cycleops and the blackburn fluid ones, so they seem like good choices. Now to sit on ebay, and wait............

i agree with beads, the more projects you can come up with, the easier it is to justify that new compound miter saw, jointer, planer, mortiser...

nevermind that your cost per part is in the neighborhood of $500... :D

anyone need a wheel stand?

So, is anyone using rollers??? If so, what brand?

I have a mag trainer now, and want to spend some of this winter working on my upper body positioning. You know, not moving the arms and torso, the legs are the only thing moving.

You made your wheel riser out of wood? Geez just grab some spare steel lying around and weld one together, now that's a project. :D
Regarding trainers, I purchased a cheapo magnetic one from Bikenashbar and wished I hadn't. It's really noisy and doesn't work that great. I would go with the fluid for sure.
