travel to/lodging in Lake Placid
As far as getting into IM lake placid, you will either need to qualify at a qualifying race or pay the big bucks and do the community fund route.
Flying into saranac lake is an option and you can easily bike to lake placid or bum a ride.
once in lake placid if you get a near by hotel (which they all really are) you wouldnt need a car.
you would only need a car if you wanted to drive the course or sight see a bit. but there are so many athletes to hook up with for whatever you may need a car for.
hotels are very expensive that week, and most want a one week commitment and most fill up very veyr quickly.
i have stayed several places up there. my favorite place to stay is best western golden arrow which is 2 minute walk to the race start. it is expensive however. i have also stayed at the adk inn on the lake which is right across the street from the race start. (very convenient) but very expensive and im sure booked by now.
cheaper options could include camping?, there are several places to camp. but my first year there i stayed at Shultes Lodge and Cabins. ( i hope i spelled that correctly) They have roomsin the lodge and indivdual or two people cabins. very inexpensive. i think around 80 bucks a night the week of ironman was what i paid.
they are located along the bike and run course about 1 1/2 mile, if that , from the race start.
you are not right in town but close and it was much cheaper than being right by the race venue.
and the owners are great. very nice.
hope that helps some.
book soon if you plan on doing it

Thanks lindab. When I said "get into lake placid" I really meant physically get into (driving/flying). I am already registered for the race. Those cabins sounded like a good deal. Did they have bathrooms and showers? How did you book?
John
duh, sorry for the misunderstanding on my part.
glad to hear you are all ready in the race.
the cabins are modern, they have a bathroom in them. a tv etc.
there are about 10 or so of them on the property of the lodge.
they are nice, small but like a hotel room.
the first year i did IMLP i called schultes directly and made my reservations.
check out the listing of places to stay in the high peaks region and you can get the website, a look at the place and a phone number.
this past summer while i was up there in june training my sister flew into albany to join me.
she rented a car and drove up, easy drive. less than two hours.
if you want a car that week, that may be the way to go.
hope that helps

Anybody have any thoughts on the best way to get into lake placid and perhaps where to stay? I was thinking of either flying into albany, ny and renting a car to make the 2 hr. drive into lake placid or flying into saranac lake which is only 9 miles from the race venue. Could I forget about renting a car and just ride my bike into lake placid when it is necessary (it's only a half hour ride)? Also, all the hotels I am looking at are ridiculous. $160 a night for an econolodge??? Any better options out there?
