IM Packing list.
Beads,
Are you driving or flying???? I drove so was able to bring everything under the sun (ie multiples of everything, even food....)
Scott, I carried a list of things to do during the bike ride. I laminated it and put it in the bento box. The list included:
Eat cliff bar every hour
Drink Gatorade/proteins every 30 minutes
Keep 80% hr effort
Don’t drink 30 minutes before run
Spin spin spin before T2
Few mental words: I practiced, I like it & I can do this
These are things I knew from the beginning but I didn’t take any chances to go wrong in my first IM.
Hope it helps and good luck in Panama City.
I am loading up the truck and driving down to PCB.
I just made my vacation arrangement with work.
I have a place to stay too.
I know the basics but from what I have seen on TV and read in the forums.
I gather it is set up a little differently??
Nothing to it, but to do it
Yes set up is different (at least from what I had done before)
They give you transition bags for everything which you put your number on.
Then on Saturday you go to the trans area with your bike and rack that . At IMC you were not allowed to put your shoes or helmet on your bike, had to go in the bag.
There will be a rack with your number you hang your swim to bike bag on and then a different one for your bike to run (different location in transition area).Dropping off is good so you get to see where everything will be and plan thing out.
Sunday morning you will have a chance to put stuff in your bags also but I would do it on Saturday just to make sure everything is "set"
So then you go from the swim to your bag, then to the changing tent. Then out to your bike.
From the bike you do a similar thing only you grab your bag from a different location. The volunteers will be in the tent to help you gather up your stuff, change etc. They then make sure everything gets back into one location so when you pick your stuff up at the end of the race, its all together again :)
Scott, for me, during IMC was:
Pre Race:
Tool kit for bike with the usual stuff I carry to all Tris. Ask and I'll send you a list. Four spare tubes, 2 spare tires, vasaline, Ibuprofen, 2 spare wheels (from the other bike), pretty much double of everything identified below. In case it rained or was cold I had long sleve shirt, running jacket that could fold up in a pouch so I could carry it, leggings, arm warmers, duct tape, vitamins, extra cleats w pedals.
For the race I used:
Swim: goggles, earplugs, wetsuit , swim cap, timing chip band, HR monitor. Under suit I wore the Trifuel singlet, with bike shorts.
T1: In bag, helmet, sunglasses, bike shoes, suntan lotion, 4 gels, banana, 3 powerbars, Hoggie, 2 chock chip cookies. On the bike I had 2 spare tubes, the saying stuck to the aerobars that said "Slow is Steady, Steady is Fast", 2 bottles of gastrolyte sol'n, aerobottle filled w water.
Bike special needs bag: hoggie/sub, bag of salt and viniger chips, beef jerky
T2: running shoes, socks, visor, 2 oatmeal cookies, ibuprofen.
Run special needs: threw away cause I couldn't eat anotyher hoggie and chips (yuk!). Card from the family I asked them to put in to give some inspiration to continue and important Ibuprofen!
After race my bro had a mother of a large garlic pizza for me after I crossed the finish line. I ate ALL of it. Hope this helps. Good Luck buddy! When is the race? November......????? What number are you so that we can keep track?
any trick ..... for race day.
BTW, I don't thing it's a good idea to turn a trick or do any that day sir ;)

Considering the price of gas,
and the fact I am driving ,
I might have to to get some gas money to drive home!
Thanks for the list

for special needs- anything you might want to eat or wear that they dont provide on the course.
in my bike bag I had a pb sammich as well as the accelerade I drink. For the run, I only had a long sleeve shirt in case it got cold.....
If you dont need it, dont bother as it would be a waste of time
BBB--FOUR TUBES??????!!!!DANG I only carried 2 and a patch kit.
Ya don't get the special needs bags back. Remember that.
Brit: I had only 2 tubes on the bike. I brought 4 to Penticton.

Thanks Brittda,
So I guess you don't have a traditional transition area?
Your bike is racked and nothing around it?
So from the swim you get your T1 bag, does someone hand it to you or do you have to get it?
Then you go a changing tent and do your transition there?
Same for T2?
So it is Transition in a bag?
Nothing to it, but to do it
The race is done with T1 and T2 equipment in separate bags. In registration you get 4 bags with the pakage. All are labelled. One bag for T1, one for T2, one for Special needs bike and one for Special needs Run. They also give you a sticker page with your numbers. There are stickers for helmet, bike, and all four bags. You put what ever you need for T1 in the T1 bag , what ever you need for T2 in the T2 bag and what ever you WANT in both the Special Needs bags.
After coming out of the water you find your row and run down. Call your number and a volunteer will take it off the rack and give it to you. The same for T2. Then run into the change tent and use the stuff in the bags to change. There should be volunteers there to help you with emptying the contents and picking through the stuff. They will clean up after you too, so be sure all that you have has your race number on it, especially the wetsuit!

Yup and the volunteers get it all back to one location (they will tell you which rack--at IMC it was the T1 rack) for you.
At IMC you could put no helmet or shoes on the bike, I know some people were concerned about this, didnt matter to me since I never attach my shoes first any way. They both go in your T1 bag. Actually it makes it easier to remember the all important #1 rule....
Attach chin strap on helmet before mounting bike. This way you just do it in the changing tent.
P.S...we know how hard it will be for you Beads, but no peaking in the womens tent. ahahhhahahahahahahahaha :D
So the volunteers clean up your mess?
I won't peak into the womens changing tent I promise.
I will just accidentally go in there and change
Nothing to it, but to do it
yes, depending on how many people are in there at the time obviously. They help you change and get your stuff back in your bag. If they are busy you just shove your stuff in the bag and hand it over, they do the rest.
I did end up getting both my special needs bags back at IMAZ, but not everyone did. They tried to get 'em back to us though.
I also have an "anything goes" stomach, but put things I crave during workouts into my bike special needs bag... a few of my favortie gels and an extra bottle of my preferred sports drink. Also a few extra CO2 cartridges in case I'd used some already.
On the run I only took in liquids 'cause I was feeling great with just them, and my special needs bag held another of my fav gels in case I wanted it, and a long sleeved shirt in case it was cooling down.
As for a list in the transition bag, I had those in each bag as well. My trick with it was to put it in a shoe so that I had to see it -- else I would have forgotten the list was there.
Oh, and my new favorite workout food? Gummy bears! I carried regular gummy bears and sour gummy worms with me at my last AR and they were great! (along with cheezits, poptarts, milk 'n cereal bars, ham sandwhiches, trail mix... ;))
Where are the special needs bags?
Are they at a certain spot on the bike route and the run route??
Nothing to it, but to do it
At IMAZ the special needs on the bike was at around mile 60 on the bike (if I remember right) but since it was a 3 loop course you actually had 2 chances to grab it (but once you got it, it was in a different bin and you couldn't get it again). The run bag was at the half way point. Volunteers are they and hand your bag to you as fast as they can. On the bike I found I just stopped to grab mine, and on the run they had it in hand ready for me (but I ended up not wanting it).
Do you get some of this info before hand? Like a few weeks or is it in your race packet?
Nothing to it, but to do it
I think some of it might have appeared on the website at some point... but definitely in the race packet when you get the bags and the final directions on filling them. I believe they try to have them as close to the halfway point of each discipline though.
I check the IM Florida site regularly for updates but none yet.
They still have the schedule from last year posted.
Thanks for all the info
I tri to be as informed and prepared as I can be and then IAD(Improvise Adapt and Overcome)
Only if I need to. :D
Nothing to it, but to do it
The IMC info did not post the information until about a week before the race.

To all who have done an Ironman or Iron distance Triathlon or are planning on doing one.
Could you share your packing list for the race?
Or maybe a particular item you found helpful to have or any trick or hints for race day.
I am doing IM Florida in a November. I have a good idea what to bring but you never know.
This is my 3rd season doing tri's and have done all distances up to 1/2 IM.
Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks, :D
