What do you see when you train??
Haha, good topic.
Now that I am back at school, all I see is flat farmland. Its a little boring, no real hills. Back in New Brunswick, there were so many hills, it was great challenging terrain for biking. Loved it. Lots of moose and the odd bear too. You could challenge them to races.
Ame thing with the lakes here, visibility is nothing.
In the pool I can see this black line that runs all the way from one end to the other, so I guess that is pretty exciting.
Swim: the sun coming up over the fence around the pool, or the wall of an indoor pool. Only when I'm really lucky do I see the beach and dolphins!
Road Bike: Cars, pavement, some houses, some less residential areas and then some brush
Mtn bike: gorgeous hills and trees and trails
Run: dirt paths, neighborhoods
when really really really lucky (and training up in Big Bear like the last 2 weekends): cliff views of the lake, the top of the clouds, the sun rising over the San Bernardino mountains, snow on a distant peak, lots of brush I'm climbing through...
For most of my training it is even the same sights year-round. Sometimes I wish Southern CA had more seasons.... but other times I'm glad it's always so easy to train outdoors.
Fun Topic!
Swim Indoor: Pretty much the same as BrianMc, but there is a cute lifeguard ther once in awhile who I chat with.
Swim Outdoor(lake): I see lots of sea(lake?) weed and some boats. My head is popping up all the time when I hear a noise so I don't get run over.
Swim Outdoor(ocean): Lots of waves, and strange looks on the faves of the people on the beach when I get out.
Bike Indoor: Whatever is on TV or perhaps a DVD
Bike Outdoor: Some nice scenery and some cars. On some routes and times no cars the entire time but lots of farms and farm smells
Run Indoor: The window to under the deck, but it is usualyy at 5:00 am so it is dark so I don't really se anything outside, but I see a wall. Glad I have my iPod!!
Run Outdoor: Sometimes my little suburban neighborhood, sometimes the track, sometimes lots of nothing but trees and maybe a farm.
Nothing to it, but to do it
Pool swims - the lovely black line on the bottom.
Lake swims - Lake Michigan - same odd looks from the beach goers as I put on the wetsuit.
Bike - Lots of deer and cows. There is a nice llama farm on one route. They like to run along the fence as I go by. Mostly Spinervals when on the trainer.
Running - nice trails through the woods, and some quiet road routes. Tho, it is nice when travelling to see the huge scenery differences. Just did some running in the Denver area as well as Tacoma.
Nice change of pace. Try to limit the indoor running even in the cold - otherwise just run to the TV.

Ditto of Kyillee...we live about 20 min from each other. I have been ocean swimming in the late afternoon/early evening the last few weeks so i have been able to catch the sun set over Catalina Island. Also on my trail run I see a beautiful canyon w/coastal sage scrub and the ocean in the distance. I too wonder about living somewhere else...we have been contemplating it...the scenery while nice gets old after 29 years in the same spot..but it is nice to train year round.
Training at home:
Swim: small lake with visability down to my hand and green water, one end touches the woods, so one way I can see some trees.
Bike: Corn fields, some wheat and narrow streets. To be honest I do not look at environment. During slow rides I have been able to catch same incredible views on the Baltic Sea.
Run: Running in the woods provides some great views. I think we have the most beautiful track here. But it is way too short! Only a hundred meters, slight uphill right through the trees!
Been to danmark this year and loved it. It is windy and the roads are shared with your training buddy only. In my case my uncle. We climbed somewhat of a mountain, 42meters!!, with 40 meters during the first 200 meters! After another 400 it was over anyway. Up there you could see a lot North sea!
Swimming in the Swane lake close to castle Neuschwanstein in Bavaria was definitely the best swimming experience so far. Mountains and woods, the castle, you cannot find a nicer playground, believe me!
I ean a lot in Bavaria last winter, snow running is great. After using some snow shoes I loved it even more! Try it when you can!
Where I'd love to train: San Diego. Kyrghyzstan. Sweden. Colorado.
Swim indoor: the black line and sometimes getting a look at my training partners stroke
Bike Indoor: Spinnervals or the latest chick flick (which are very entertaining at 5am)
Bike Outdoor: Trees, cars, bikers, rollerbladers, runners and deer
Run outdoor: the national monuments and/or the potomac river
(looking forward to tonights run)
Hey Cerve,
It sounds like you have some great scenery!! I would love to have a chance to train ther.
I guess if you get used to any area durring training it does get boring.
A change of scenery is alway nice.
Nothing to it, but to do it
Great thread!
Swim indoors: Same as everyone else - a black line and the fast people in the lane next to me going by
Bike outdoors: depends - sometimes expensive cars and big homes in Potomac, MD; sometimes cows, llamas, and farms; and other times the national monuments and Potomac river
Bike indoors: Troy Jacobson on my Spinervals DVDs
Running outdoors: most of the time the C&O canal and Potomac river with Canadian geese, deer, beautiful heron and egret birds, and black snakes; other times the national monuments and national airport
Running indoors: the sweaty person in front of me at the gym on the treadmill
Living here in Maryland, get to see some great scenery.......
Swimming: Outdoor - get to see the Chesapeake Bay and the Bay Bridge and of course plenty of jelly fish....
Indoor - obviously the usual black line as well as the aqua aerobics class going on in the lanes next to me.....you wouldn't believe the currents that they churn up!!!!
Bike: Outdoor - Corn field after corn field as well the great views of the inlets in and around the Chesapeake Bay area......various types of animals, including a stray crab once on a road!!!!!
Indoor - Whatever happens to be on the TV and also recorded cycling and triathlons.
Run: During the summer when the evening are light get to see the rural farming areas that stretch out for miles around my area. During the winter the runs tend to be limited to those streets which have lighting and so just suburban houses and parks.
This area of Maryland is great for training.......
[COLOR=Navy]"What the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve"
Stillness and quietness of the mind returns as I retrace the path of morn
Daily rhythms hold at workday close
The wind is a constant companion
Even when the leaves are idle
In the face, at the side
It cools me when I’m hot
Brushes a sweat drop from my eye
As the wind whistles by the ears it sings a broken melody
People line and wait by lights that change
I see faces
Sad ones, happy, busy, deep in thought
A breathe of life is called forth to me
By the joy of the rhythmic movement
And so, time becomes irrelevant
The sun has moved
The mind reflects on the day
Forget the problems and live for now
For the horizon communicates purpose of the place I want to be.
That's sorta what I see.

I guess it all kinda fits with this thread... when I ride with a training buddy, what I see during the ride is often his rear!
You guys are nuts!
What I see...mostly houses and cars. But my favorite views are stars on early morning runs and rides, sunrise & sunsets, Simpson skies (blue, blue skies with white puffy clouds :) ), and snow-capped mountains on crisp winter days.
When I ride around Puddingstone, then I get to see lots of greenery all around and clouds and trees reflected in the lake.

Or at least it was...
The gas passing around here is all flareing from endless gas wells and oil sites. Road biking gives endless bush interupted by enourmous oil rig vehicles. Swimming is indoors or in dark slewy water (a slew is a shallow prairie marshy/puddle-like lake, perhaps a Canadianism?). Running ,though (and mountain biking) is beautiful with pines interupted by the odd Eagle, owl, innumerable deer and occassional bear. Cougar tracks last winter. Fortunately no actual cougar.
Road trips south to Jasper National Park provide crystal clear (though icy) mountain fresh lakes, some of the world's most beautiful highways for cycling and perfect mountain trails for running from 5-50 miles(not that I have ever run that far). Wait: why don't I move to Jasper?
Living in Phoenix the scenery I see when I train is slightly different. It’s not very green here, except in the winter (and around the Golf Courses). Early morning training is awesome, there is nothing quite like the sun coming up in the morning in the desert. The purple and red hues coming through the hills and cactus are spectacular. Only problem is, once the sun is fully up (especially in the summer) it gets extremely hot. Then all I see are hallucinations of Starbuck’s Frappuccinos and ice-cold mountain streams. I can’t see anything for real because of the sweat in my eyes. I also see a lot of people driving by giving me looks of disbelief like “what are doing out in this heat boy…I hope you are wearing sunscreen….T :D
Once during an early spring race I saw a woman walking piglet with a collar and leash and I have spotted Elvis more than once. No he wasn't walking a pig.
The best was the mile race behind, beside and ahead of a very large bull moose at 19.5 mph.
Yes, I have witnesses and no I don't do drugs.
I also saw wild turkeys doing it in the road.
swim: pumpkin colored sunsets on the great south bay or starry moonlit skies in a heated outdoor pool.
the bike: a tacky neon airstrip and city painted on the walls of the spin room. when i'm on the trainer i see swans, seagulls, egrets, canadian geese frollicking in the boat channel below my sunroom window.
run: the instrument panel on the treadmill.
All of these posters and no one knows how to put up a picture?
tsk, tsk.
Well, I run by here all the time. That's Kalamalka Lake Beach nr. Vernon, halfway through my 16km run route,.and where I did all my swimming this summer.

and my fave on the IMC bike route by Vaseaux Lake

This is too good to skip. I run on the hard sand shoulder of the old highway above Kal Lake on a 16km out and back from my house, looking at Kal lake in the picture below. Oh yeah, and I see the occasional rattlesnake (usually dead!)

Swim: Hot Spring pool, very useful in the winter. A little busy in the summer, but a good 25 yards.
Run: Trail runs in the Sangre De Cristo mountains, fantastic sunsets from the east side of the valley. Yes, rabbits, the occassional bear, many deer, the odd naturist ( :p ), snakes - I save them from the roads, elk, bald eagles, golden eagles, wild turkeys, more rabbits, hummingbirds etc. In winter, not much. Rabbits, owls and eagles.
Ride: Highway 285 between Villa Grove and Saguache, with a run over to Salida for hill work. In winter, I stay indoors.
Best moment on a run was when the herd of elk crossed the path right in front of my training partner and I, on mile 14 of an eventual 16-miler. What an awesome experience!
Curse you and your digital camera. I have buddies in Vernon and did my first open water swim last summer in Kal lake.Whether it's a summer or a winter trip skiing I always get home incredulous that I didn't stay in Vernon. Was moments from buying a lake lot on Kal lake a few years ago (East side, near the provincial park) but decided I couldn't afford it and wouldn't be able to move there in reasonable time. Always the financial whiz.
You are blessed, Prince of Clydes

PoC I'm sooooooo jealous!!!
Biking during the summer, I see flat, straight, narrow roads, a couple cars all going too fast, and lots and lots of farmland. It takes 20 min to get out of town and lights etc. It really isn't good riding out of town either, but its better it you go about 15 mi into WI. During the school year I see traffic, stop signs/lights, glass, and more traffic and the occasional minuteman historical marker because the best way out of town passes through lexington and then concord... and rain and snow and wind because I can't stand trainer riding and limit those to only the days when its actually snowing or when i procrastinate my workout until its dark and late... But it takes about 45 min to get to decend roads where there isn't a light all the time and its not 'good' riding until you are to concord - but thats a 30-40 mi round trip depending on route...
Running both at home and at school is on a paved path by the river (Rock r and Charles r). Both rivers smell in spots and both paths are between a busy road and the river, both paths are crowded at all hours... but thats about the only thing that is similar between home and cambridge...
POC...
...the most beautiful place on this earth! i'm jelly too!
amy (....ohmmmmm... hey i'm trying?) :)
swimming indoors i see the board with my workout written on it and my watch. maybe the black line.
outdoors - our beach is not the clearest so it's brown sandy water and the occasional dolphin or stingray.
bike outdoors only and i see all sorts of roadkill, beautiful sunrises over chemical plants and the ocassional car turning left in front of me for a way-too-close of a call.
run outdoors only and this is by far my favorite. I ususally run while it's still dark so i don't get to see much but on weekends with my long runs i see deer, armadillos, snakes, alligators, snapping turtles, rabbits, cardinals, humming birds, a beautiful rain forest type woodsy trail and a bunch of flowers and berry bushes.
oh yes and POC, grrrr,,, stop posting those pictures. I just want to jump into them everytime i see them.
PoC,
Great pix,
I am going to make it my wallpaper.
Then I can set up the treadmill and the bike trainer in front of the computer. :D
Nothing to it, but to do it
Swim - Pool : Black Line, Stuff that someone else dropped in the pool. Old ladies doing water aerobics. (The perfume wafting across the water at 5:00 AM will wake you up....)
Swim - Outside, Mississippi River - Catfish and Sunken Riverboats (ok, just kidding I don't swim in old man river)
Bike Indoors - My dog looking at me.
Bike Outdoors - Hills, Soybeans, Corn, Wheat, and the River.
Run - same per above....just much slower.....
I see cars who don't see me.
I see people who take up the entire sidewalk as I'm running toward them and don't move over.
On the flip side, every once in a while, I see this cute woman running, but it is almost always when I'm on my bike. :-)
Soon.... I'll be abe to see the inside of people's homes as it gets darker, and then I see lots of ideas I can do to my house.
Another good question is, what does my dog see while he is running with me?
/greg
Hey gmarch,
I saw you were from Montvale NJ, I am from Hopatcong NJ.
Do you ever ride on 9W?

Because we all train in different parts of the world, i'm curious as to what people see around them when they swim, bike, run:
Swim: Nothing. The visability in Long Island sound is 6 inches (on a good day!!).
Bike/Run: Lots of farm animals; ie, cows, horses, chickens, roosters (my favorite when they're waking up the farmers early in the morning), & emu's (look like ostriches). Now that it's getting closer to fall :( i see alot of deer. The scenary is great, but sometimes the smell is a little much!!!!
