Swim Time?
hmmm... are you sure that you are going a 1/2 mile? 30 minutes for 880 yards? you might be having tracking issues. current and tide could be affecting your swim. it's not a fast time for that distance, but it's not terrible either. open water swims take some getting used to, especially ocean ones. swells and current, (not to mentions waves and wind) all play havoc with your normal time. if you are kicking butt in the pool but feel you are slow in the open, you could try putting a GPS in a ziplock and sticking it under your swim cap to get an accurate assessment of your swimming.. . you might be swimming faster than you think.

Great idea! I have to try that. The things one learns from this site......

TdB -- have you tried the GPS in cap thing? I'm nervous about it since although Garmin claims the Forerunner 301 is waterproof to some depth I trust it in no water. I guess I'm worried that the ziplock will leak and my toy will die...

Ive got a 301 and swam with it a bunch of times with no problems. One thing i havent done is swam with the HRM on. Is that waterproof too?
[FONT=Arial]"It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard is what makes it great."
Is it out and back? or out and along the shoreline?
Are there lots of waves coming in? or is it in calmer waters?
Lots of things to factor in. You will probably have a slowere time.
Big difference from a pool, and even quite a bit of difference from lake or bay water where you don't have waves to contend with.
Nothing to it, but to do it
For swimming with a 301 -- did you just plastic baggie it and then under the swim cap? or what? (sorry it's off the main topic of this thread)
Thanks for your replies...it is at Zuma Beach...the ocean could be entirely flat or larger waves. I think that is what is making me so nervous.
I checked the race website http://www.nauticamalibutri.com/
From what I can see on the course description it looks like you go out and then
turn right and paralell the beach and then turn right again and get to shore.
Most of the times they set the course to go with the direction of the current so it should be helpful.
They also mentioned on the site about a open water swim clinic held on Sept 17th.
If you are not too far it might be worth checking out.
If you don't have a wetsuit it also looks like XTerra will be renting them at $30 for the day.
Which is pretty reasonable. You just have to reserve it ahead of time. wetsuitrental.com Check the website for more info.
Good luck and keep calm

I've talked to several people who swim and surf with their 301 under their swimcap or wetsuit. One of the founders of motionbased.com (VERY cool site, especially if you have a 301) told me that he never surfs without his. As long as its in a baggie it should be fine.
Regarding swimming with a heartrate monitor, I'm told that technically it works but I've never been able to get a good reading. You shouldn't press any buttons on you HRM watch while underwater though, water can get in pretty easily and ruin your watch.
TriByFire -- thanks! And I also love motionbased... great site!
I don't have a GPS but I do have a Timex HRM. It is Water Resistant to 50 meters.
It has been thru quite a bit and I have worn it in salt and fresh water. I can press the buttons underwater and have had no problems with leakage.
Is yours supposed to be Water Resistant??
Sometimes being in the water or maybe it is the wetsuit must interfere with the transmission from the HRM around my chest to the watch. I sometimes get no Data.

Scott...thanks for the great motivation. I do have a wetsuit...so that takes care of one thing. I had a good ocean swim last night. I swam the same distance as the course and it took me about 1/2 hr. If the waves are small then I think I will be ok...I hope! Thanks again.
Hey Outdoorgirl,
You are doing the best thing and getting a feel for it yourself.
Are you swimming by yourself or are you having somebody watch you?
If you are a little bit uncomfortable I would definitely have somebody around.
If you can't and you need to swim don't go too far out from shore and swim paralell.
I have to swim solo a lot and I use one of those rescue cans that lifeguards have. Just in case.

Did you check out the clinic they are having on the 17th? Might be helpful to get some tips.
1/2 hour isn't so bad.
As you practice and get your technique down and get used to the open water you will get better.
Nothing to it, but to do it
I normally swim with one other person or my TNT team. We have our last group practice on the 17th and get all of our race info so I can't make their clinic. I think I will be ok just as long as the waves are small though. How do you attach that can to you while swimming? That is a good idea for sure.
The rescue can has a line about 7 feet long which is attached to a looped strap.
You put the loop over your head so it is on one shoulder.
As you swim it floats behind you.
I do most of my open water swims with my wetsuit so I don't even feel it.
Once in awhile I have swam without the wetsuit and it isn't that bad either.
I wear a rash guard shirt that surfers wear and I don't really feel it.
For a challenging workout (not by my choice) my kids will hang on it while I swim.
They are disappointed I don't go fast when towing them. :D
Nothing to it, but to do it
From the pic it looks like the rescue can also has a leash like surfboards -- the strap with a velcro ending that you attach on your ankle. Seems like that would be a good upgrade if it didn't have one, as I'd prefer something dragging behind me from the ankle than around my neck/shoulder.
scott...just out of curiosity do you swim in the ocean in NJ? Thanks again for all the assistance. I actually may recommend one of these to my coach to use for some of the not so sure of themself swimmers. There are a couple of older ladies on my team that take a very very long time to finish the swim course.
Kyillee,
The velcro on the strap is so you can wrap the line around the can and then the strap
wraps around andvelcros to itself. It is easier to store that way.
It is actually pretty comfortable and gives you a piece of mind.
If it was attached to your ankle it might cause problems when you stop and your legs go down into the water. I think it might interfere with your kick too!
The strap goes around your shoulder ,and then the line is at the end which is about the small of your back. It extends beyond you feet so the can doesn't interfere with your stroke or your kick.
Outdoorgirl,
I do swim in down at the NJ Shore when I get the chance. I also live near a couple of lakes so I have places to do my open water swimming.
I usually do my swimming in the pool at the YMCA. It is around the corner from work.
I go there during my lunch hour and get a my mile in.

What do you all think is an ok to slow swim time for a 1/2 mile ocean swim? I am doing the Nautica Malibu race in a couple weeks as my first tri. I am pretty darn slow in the ocean...at least 1/2 hr to maybe 40 min for that distance. I am hoping i will be quicker...but I am a little scared of the swim...bike and run no prob. I hear some people are really really slow...I am quicker than about a handful of people on my team. I don't understand it...in the pool I am very quick and a decent swimmer. Get me in a wetsuit swimming buoys in the ocean and I feel like i am flailing my arms about!
