Running Frustration

Aight, plain and simple. I feel as if my running sucks at my race however when I workout I bust it out and run well.

I sat down and figured out from my last race it was because my bike was awesome staying at a speed of 20-23 mph w/ 2 gentlmen and felt awesome. I got off my bike and began my running and struggled with not pain but pure struggle. I ran w/ the first place girl of my age group for 2 1/2 miles and broke down and told her I'll be behind her. I paced and just was out of gas it seemed. I ran in and all I heard was her yelling for me to go and finish. I made a new friend. :o

Point being, I know someone out in "Tri-land" has experienced this. Any thoughts/ideas that can be thrown out? I have a race on Sept. 11th in Akron and to have something to work on before hand or to think about would be awesome. The thing that kills me is that I have been running since I was 7 and done distance and sprints. I'm just stuck it seems.

how do you train ? im a runner but running off the bike is different ! it takes time to develop but you should try if you are not already doing these types of workouts. i call them super bricks. maybe start with slow and easy. 30 min bike 10 min run, 30 min bike 10 min run. just to give you perspective i do a 1.5 hour ride 30 min run and a 1 hour ride 20 min run. that will make you a stronger runner. i do the second one at a faster pace than the first, concentrating on cadenece on the bike and a faster leg turn over running.

hey chris,
question for you... same day you do 1.5/30 and 1/20 or on different days? just curious. sounds like a great workout to break in the running legs. :)

Heres my recommendation: Put your bike on a trainer or rollers right next to a 400 meter/440 yard track. Go 10 minutes easy to warm-up on the bike, wearing a HRM keeping it in your aerobic zone. Then go hard for 6 minutes, near maximal but in control. Dismount, perform a transition and go hard on the track for one kilometer or two laps. Then jog to your transition area, perform another transition, and repeat the hard 6minute bike split/transition/1km run/transition/bike 6 min/transition/1km run/transition/etc.

Works on all aspects of ground training, great race simulation!

Good ideas big time. Right now I would like to soak up on ideas for winter training and so forth. I like Chris's idea as well as Trianimal's. When I get a trainer Tri I will so try that one for sure. My heart loves the track so anything involving that would be awesome.

My workouts are based on a 2 workout ordeal. Meaning I go bike for 10-15 miles, come back to where I started and head on out for a run. Either being a 20 min to a 30-45 min. run. I work off of how long I'm out for and work on different speeds with or without my MP3 player. And or either I go swim for 30 min./sprint workout and always end up with a run after that as well. I get in a solid workout (2 1/2 or 3 hours), just seems running eventhough I concentrate on my getting off the bike and moving it out to the run just sucks in competition. I appreciate your comments, just need to get better upon myself for this last one. Hope I can stay with the pack ya know?

One of the other things that will come is because of where we live, all the hills are naturally going to make you a stronger runner. You said it yourself that the hills are starting to get a little easier the more that you do em. Keep your head up! You'll have your cheerleaders there rooting for you!!!!!

Amy, I find that if I workout to a point of exhaustion, where I have to have a definite sleep after, and then I take a rest the following day, the next time I do the event I am stronger in it (just a little), or it may just be perception. Hmmmm.

Maybe it will work for you! I hope. Either way, mental or physical it's positive :)
