Well, I think I've settled on the Trek 7500FX Hybrid bike after doing some research and talking with the sales guy yesterday. This should be my Xmas present from my wife to myself this year (i.e. It's still coming out of my bank account;))

I asked what the difference from the model and the 2006 model was and the guy said they had the same features, so I took that as them not discounting the last year's model any. Since I won't be getting this until Xmas, I'm hoping that some negotiations could take place at that time since I can't imagine too many folks buying bikes out of season. I live in NC so it does get cold in January!

The cost was for $599 and I plan on getting some aerobars there.

My question is....for a bike that's only $600 (a lot for me, but definately not one of their BIG sellers), is there any room to haggle or ask for discounts on accessories? I'll still need the aerobars, a helmet and pretty much all the accessories (I don't think I'll get a pair of shoes just yet). Just looking for info for my first purchase of a bike at an actual bike shop (i.e. not Target or Walmart;)) I guess my question is...what should I ask for (or what would YOU ask for). Thanks!

So....what you're saying is....benching 1.5 times your body weight 10+ times is NOT good for triathletes?! OOOOOH! :D

Good news, just found out that a good friend of mine (close fraternity brother) works for a bike shop. He was very confident that he could beat the h#ll out of that price. So he'll find out what he can do and then at least I'll be able to find out what room the place has to negotiate. I'll let everyone know just so you know the wiggle room for this bike.

I wouldn't hesitate to ask about discounts on accessories or installation of the accessories. The markup on helmets, aerobars and other accessories can be as high as 100%, or at least it i on the shops I've worked in and otherwise come to know pretty well. Usually they can have some flexibility there. And don't think that $600 isn't a big ticket item for them. It can show you're serious and have potential for future purchases. That said, one of the nest strategies for discounts is repeat business. The more you're in there the more they'll work to get you to come back. Just don't be a pest about discounts. Ask, but don;t expect.

Yes, Jose, I second trianimals words. Is it cause you wanna ride all year in the rain and snow too? BTW how is the weight loss coming along? Are you keeping the HR low? It's great to see you still working out with the "interest"

Jose,
Congratulations on sticking with the program and getting a bike.
You're probably not going to win any races with the Trek 7500FX , but that's not the point, is it?
Its a good bike that you'll be comfortable riding --- and that's reason enough to buy it.

If you want a road bike that's lighter and faster, but built with comfort in mind, you might be interested in the Trek 1000C for about the same price. The Giant OCR3 (and several other models/brands - including the Trek 1000T) is about the same price, too, if you were to go for a road bike.

Keep up with the training. Do you have any plans for a triathlon next year? It would be a great incentive in the coming months.

Well, I still haven't done my first tri, but I feel that I'm in good enough shape to do a sprint without any problems and maybe do a olympic with a lot of suffering. So once I do my first tri, I may decide I don't like it. So getting a hybrid is doing a few things for me. It's going to allow me to compete in a tri...it's going to allow me to commute to work (about 8 miles each way....even in the winter!) and if I decide I don't like tri's (heaven forbid), I'll still have a bike that I can do other things with. If I decide I want to get heavier into tri's after next year and after a few years of using this bike, I may just trade up. Don't know.

And I do plan on doing several tri's...all next year though (won't be getting this bike until Xmas, so it'll be a bit hard to do a tri this year, even if any are left). And I'm still working out with my low HR. I'm not loosing any weight, but I think I'm loosing inches on my stomach?! I swear that my gut is smaller now even though after two weeks I still weigh the same. Must be my imagination:D
