Sprint to Olympic

I really want to be at an Olympic Tri level, but I am being dragged down by my swim capabilities.

I can take care of the bike and run, but I am only swimming a 19min 800 now, and beat. How hard is it to progress to an Olympic from Sprint in regards to the swim? I will be taking a course and UofM this fall - Masters Swim/Triathlon - and hopefully that will ensure my step up.

Any success stories? haha.

19 min for an 800 isn't all that bad, pretty much MOP. I would suggest to just keep putting in the time (3x/week) and gradually bring your distance up to 1500 or more.
The masters program is a good choice. By the end of the program you'll be going longer and faster.

Hey twright,
I entered my first Olympic distance event, never having swum as far as 1500m before.
I figured, "They have kayaks. It won't be all bad!"
I wasn't last out of the water either.
You are better at race time than you think you are, as a beginner anyway.

Its not that hard to increase the distance, just start adding 50m to your swim length every session, and you'll be there in no time. If you want to do an olympic next year, you have plenty of time. I went from not being able to swim to being able to swim 3km over the course of one winter, swimming 3x a week.

Thay all have great advice. I would reiterate what BrianMc says. Increase the length gradually. Get a book and read about the technique for swimming. Tha masters class will also help you. Trifuel also has a lot of info on this (tech). I am in the same situation as you buddy. My goal for next year is to slice 15min from my time! It's gonna be a battle, but I think it's attainable.
