Combining Ride/Run to have recovery days?

All,

I am training for my first HIM in Soma, AZ at the end of October. Because I am still fairly new to the sport, I've been loosely following the 18 week HIM training program on Trinewbies.com. I missed my ride on Monday, so last night I rode Monday's ride (25 mi) and followed it with Tuesday's run (60 min). I felt awesome on both and it gave me a chance to closely examine hydration / nutrition plans.

My question is: since bricks are an important part of training, and while I'm confident I can do the 56 mile bike, and the 13.1 mile run (as I've done them both separately); is it a good idea to continue to combine my ride /run workouts?

My thought process is that it will help the bricks, help on overall race endurance, and give me recovery days in between workouts, instead of riding or running 7 days a week.

Just wondered if anyone has tried something similar - or more importantly, if I'm missing something that could lead to injury!

Any comments, suggestions would be great!

Thanks everyone,

Armour

CertInly bricks are a good thing. They develop the muscles and he endurance needed to do the event. Keep up with those. The key if you want to do longer distances is to run a bit more than usual after a hard bike. I have found that if the legs hurt on the bike and then you follow up with a brick, your body will (over time), naturally aclimatize to what you are doing to it. Most importantly "Listen to your body". If there is pain, rearrange the train schedule to suit the muscle pains to avoid the injury potential. Try to stick to the plan you have for yourself as much as possible and adapt like you have done so far.

As I have heard from many exceptional athletes, and what I have myself learned is "quality work" as opposed to "garbage miles". After you go GO HARD, rest up and do it again. Seems to work if you do it. I know garbage miles are fun, but if you do them, do them light. Have heavy days and light days. The body WLL adapt to what ever you put it through. Most importantly, like I said, LISTEN TO YOUR BODY
