Hey forumites! I am looking for feedback on the Blackwater Eagleman Half IM (June 2006). I am a decent cyclist and a better runner, but my swimming is, well let's just say, a "challenge"
I have done several marathons and shorter races. I am a newbie to the triathlon. This summer I did a sprint tri (with much success...winning my AG) and an Olympic (too warm for wetsuits and I paid for it! I was one of the last out of the water but still finished midpack overall). I am doing another OD in 2 wks. After that I have a half marathon the next wkend and a full marathon in October.
Now, my concern with Eagleman is that I heard the swim can be very choppy with a nasty current. I am hoping some of you can tell me more about it from first hand experience.
Also, is there another early season Half IM that you would recommend?

Thanks for any and all input!

You'll like the bike the and run on the eastern shore; FLAT, but that it's an ocean swim. So, the weather will influence the conditions, it can get very choppy. You can get some strongs winds too.

You may want to look into the Devilman Half-Iron Distance Triathlon in Bear, Delaware at Lums Pond State Park. The bike and run are super flat and the swim is a wave start in the lake, so it is a little better for beginers. Check out lin-mark.com the race is run in mid Sept. annually. There's a link to the race site on lin-mark.

I'll check out the race you mentioned. I am also looking at the Mooseman in New Hampshire (early June)...Do you have any input for me on that one?

Mooseman is put on by Keith Jordan at Endorfun. I did Mooseman this past June and it is a very well run race. If you are not used to hills it may be a tough first one. It was my first one and I felt pretty comfortable because I live and train in the area. However, I heard a lot of of people commenting on the difficulty of the hills. The run is flat to rolling but depending on the weather, it can be tough on a hot day with some stretches in the sun with no tree shade. The swim is "refreshing" as it is in early June in NH. The temp was 60 degrees but very doable with a full wetsuit and thermal cap.

Good luck!

I am doing the Diamondman 1/2 Ironman in a couple of weeks in Bear, Delaware and will be my first 1/2 Iron. I can give you some feedback if need be. Apparently the bike and run are dead flat and as trithis04 said the swim is a lake swim so pretty calm. It isn't an overly big race either with only about 650 people. Bear in mind that as of next year Eagleman is part of the WTC 70.3m and so will be even more competitive than before (it is a Hawaii Qualifer).
