Winter time..what then???
I'm fortunate in that I live in Texas and can train pretty much year round. We do have some cold weather and usually a lot of rain during the winter. But I can usually run, although cycling is harder because of shorter days.
I usually use the winter as a time for strength training and lots of swimming. It's also the time I hit the gym for spin classes. These can be a great supplement to cycling!
I am actually looking to buy a bike trainer this year. I figure the investment will be worth it and I really want to get a lot stronger on the bike.
I'm not sure about events in your area, but I know that we have runs and bike rides pretty much year round here. In fact both the Houston and Austin marathons are in January and February, respectively. So come on down! ;)

Winter is the best time for run training! I hit the trails in the heavy snow and ice (Rocky style), builds crazy power. Also, the cold air temp. constricts the cradio system allowing for great training sessions. Over the past year, I noticed a significant difference in aerobic fitness and strength in comparison to training partners that do the majority of there winter training indoors. Cold weather months give you a good opportunity hit the indoor track for speed sessions.
As far as races, I try to add to my run fitness and speed training by running various local 5k and 10k races. For the bike, I primarily stay on the indoor trainer w/ some MTB rides. Pool workout stay the same.

For people who live in states that sadly go through the winter/cold weather cycle, what type of competition do you do during those months? How is training? Boring? Any ideas for cross training that won't totally eliminate my progressions during the summer months?
