First Tri..Sprint..Drink now?
Nice job Travis! Yes, I too am pretty winded after the swim so my T1 time looks more like a mile split :)
On the beer side go with something a little thicker, like guiness to get a little protein in there ;)
Nice Job! I agree on the T1 portion. I am not a really good swimmer either but since I've completed my first sprint, a whole load of confidence has gone thru me. The only thing now if is that confidence can be kept up till this Sunday for my second one. (who knows!) Again, nice job!! :)
I used to be wiped out, dizzy, disoriented, and punch drunk coming out of the water.
I have worked alot on my technique and stroke, and breathing.
The better you breathe during the swim leg the better you will be during T1.
I agree with Tribro, a pint o' Guinness and a burger at you lcal Pub does the trick afterwards.
Nothing to it, but to do it
Yeah, even with a quarter mile swim, it amazes me how tired my legs feel coming out of the water, and for the first few miles of the ride. I'm hoping that improvements in my swim technique during the winter will increase my speed while decreasing my exertion --- I can dream can't I?

Hey T,
What race is this that you are referring to? I am also from Detroit area.
Also I agree with the others. As you improve in your swimming and become more effecient you should not feel whipped coming out of the water. You can save a lot of time in T1 if you can come flying out of the water and up the hill into the TA.
I think we all feel like that, dizzy and tired, when we start the endurance swims and get out of the water. It's a common problem for athletes that don't have accumulated the swim endurance. Try to boost your endurance and work on form, feeling comfy in the water. Rhythmn is the key. The longer your swims and more comfy you feel in the water the less tired you will be when you get out, at least dizzy.

maybe I am the exception...my full IM split for swimming was pretty much what I do if you break it down to a sprint (the 2.4 miles was 1:11). I am by no means a sprinter so my pace is what it is (although I think if I trained more than 1-2 days a week I might get that down). For me the hard part is the run. Again, not a sprinter so when the 3.2 miles are up, I am just getting warmed up to pick up the pace :(
BBB is right though. My first sprint I think I was just nervous, and while my time was the same I was more winded at T1 . I think part of it is the excitement of it all though. In a sprint a minute in the transition area is more critical than a min in an IM. I was much more at ease in my first IM (shockingly enough).
Congrats! get that beer! I have my last race on 10/15 and am really looking forward to a weekend or two of enjoying some beer myself!

That was the Novi Lake Tri. Since then, I raced in the Stoney Creek one and this weekend is the Autumn Colors Tri. The exception is that the distances will be just about half way between a sprint and an olympic tri, so maybe I'll just concentrate on finishing.
Last thing, how much different is it to swim in a wetsuit than without one?
Travis
I find them to be more of a hinderance. I am bouyant enough (ahahha) with out it. Depends on your skill level. For some it makes a big difference. If you are allready faster then you wont see much of a difference( I did not). For me the time it takes to get out of it after the race negates any benefit. Again though, it depends on your skill level, confidence in the water, water temp etc.
I will swim with out one in 70 degree water for a sprint, but MANY people wont. You can rent one and try it out , you may love it. I know people who do.
P.S CONGRATS on the race :)
I have a couple of wetsuits and I like them.
They helped me survived when my form was reaaly crappy.
I have worked on my technique and I am much improved, and have done the occasional tri w/o
I like the fact it give you a little buoyancy and I glide thru the water.
My time is a bit faster and I take less strokes so I am less tired.
I can get out of my wetsuit pretty fast now so I makes it woth it for me.
Of course I always see some people pass me that don't have wetsuits too.

Nothing to it, but to do it
Hey Travis, I was at Stoney and I will also be at Autumn Colors this weekend. Not sure how you can spot me, but I have a green Trek road bike with clip on aeors. Good luck!
Its different for everyone. I myself am a pretty strong swimmer and its mostly upper body with my distance freestyle as well. Personally I feel great coming out of the water and into my bike.

So ya, I made it! Unfortunately, it is almost the end of the season...but none the less I cruised across the finish line.
Course was: 800m swim, 12 mile bike, 3 mile run
Finished 1:20:05, but my question is, does everyone find that they are the most tired during the swim/bike transition? Swimming is my weakest event by far and I could barely run to the transition area, whereas after the bike I was all energized to get going on my run.
Surprisingly, my legs didn't "feel" fatigued after the bike, and I just started biking a month ago, but my run was about 30 seconds slower than usual.
Go me! Go Corona! and maybe...Go a bit of whiskey. This for celebration/knee pain.
