I know there was a thread on this before but I can't find it. If anyone can locate it for me I'd appreciate it.

I am doing the Danskin in NJ and have to ship my bike. I do not have a bike case (and really don't think I can invest in one right now). I am going to ship it to the lbs there to have them assemble it. I also have a bike box from the lbs here to ship it in. Does anyone recommend a particular shipper over another? (FedEx, UPS, etc)

Thanks in advance for any advice. My bike is pretty old so I am not worried about damage but I do need to get it there in one piece for the race. :)

I might pose that question to either the shop that is shipping or receiving it. If one or the other has a particular shipper they regularly deal with that relationship may help in the event of something happening. Other than that see if one is cheaper. Shipping something that size can get expensive.

One other thought..

Make sure to keep your helmet and shoes with you. And consider taking the pedals off and bringing them with you. In the event that something happens and you need to beg, borrow or steal a replacement having your pedals can make things smoother.

Out of curiosity what shop are you shipping the bike to? I used to live in the Sandy Hook area and am familiar with a lot of the shops in the area.

Jamie - Thanks for the great advice - I hadn't thought of asking the bike shops but that totally makes sense! A friend of mine was going to talk to someone at Beacon (Tom's River location) but I hadn't heard back from him. I also have a friend that is training for LPIM (lives in NJ too) and he suggested a place in Brielle. If you have a favorite lbs or suggestion, please let me know! I would trust someone that used to live in the area like yourself. :)

Hey new tri mom

check out the bike shop in Brielle NJ. http://www.briellecyclery.com/

Maybe they can help you out.

It is a little closer than Toms River to the race.

I live in NJ and have done some tri's at the NJ shore, nice and flat course.

I might be going to check out the event. I have a friend that is doing it.

Are you flying up or driving?

Scott
We are flying to NJ. We were going to drive but my husband has to be up in NYC for biz on Mon-Tues and I can't take a full week off from work. It would have been so much easier to drive though!

Thanks so much for that link! I am sure that is the shop my friend was telling me about. The only apprehension about the Brielle shop I have is that I'm actually staying in Lavallette. I'm leaving on Monday and flying out of PHL so I thought the Tom's River shop would be great because then I could just drop off my bike on my way out of Lavallette.

Okay that was probably more than you wanted to know!! Which races have you done in NJ??? I sure do miss it up there!!

I'd have to recommend Brielle over Beacon. I've been going to Brielle for years. Even though I live in Delaware now I usually do any bike related shopping on trips home to NJ, either going to the shop I where I worked in Freehold or Brielle. I'd recommend either without reservation. I don't bother going to Beacon anymore. Brielle is a nice high-end shop with a lot of tri customers and a team that races out of the shop. I'd have much more confidence that the mechanic putting everything together there is a pro that will do a wonderful job.

If you had any concerns I'd call and speak to Kathy (manager/owner). She's great and in my experience is always willing to go to whatever lengths she can to help out a fellow rider.

Let me know if you need any other info on the area.

Here is the site for
Beacon Cycling & Fitness (732) 929-2999
575 Fischer Blvd.
Toms River, NJ 08753
http://beaconcycling.com/site/intro.cfm

I have been to the Brielle Cycle shop and Beacon only a couple of times. I am not a regular customer of either shop so I couldn't recommend one over the other.

I have done many tri's throughout NJ, Some in NY, even DE,

Basically whenever I have a weekend available
I attempt to get a triathlon or some kind of event in.

HI- New to the forum.

Considering a tri in SF this fall, and as part of that consideration, trying to determine cost/best approach to ship bike from Florida.

Anyone have any tips/suggestions/advice? Bike shops they'd recommend in the SF area?

Many thanks!
