Hydration in an oly race?
Make sure you're hydrated beforehand this helps reduce what you need to carry on the bike. Depends on the heat but I would go with two bottles of electrolyte, no water on the bike unless one is to pour over yourself. 3 bottles is alot of fluid to drink in just over an hour on the bike. Have some electrolyte, gels or whatever you eat in training ready for the run or drink at the aid stations. Have fun.
I entered my data into the nutrition calculator by Powerbar, maybe that can help you, too.
I am doing my first short distance this weekend, too. I tried to take an Aerodrink but the stuff for fixing is not available in my LBS. So I might end up with 2x 500ml. One of them has to be carried in my tri-suit pocket because I do just have a downtube bottle holder. Hopefully the fix-it arrives in time.
I am going to hydrate during the first 5km on the bike to get in what I lost during the swim. Then I will have a gel at km 10, km 30 and maybe another one on the run. I do not know how my stomach is reacting to the gel on the run. I did a sprint in June and it worked okay.
Good Luck in the first Short-Distance!!
inlovewithcervelo -- what kind of fix it are you waiting for? I had some issues with an aero bottle before and was able to make it work with things from around home.
As for hydration during an olympic, I'd be cautious of no water on the bike -- unless you train with gel and sportsdrink, it's pretty saturated and washing down gel with sportsdrink can cause stomach issues.
I always find it a good idea to go with what you train with. What would be the harm in having some extra fluids left over on the bike at the end of the day? And on the other side, how hard would it be to run out? Personally, I'd carry 3 if I had the capacity and thought I'd be close to waiting that much.

Kyillee, profile is offering something to fix the bottle between the aero-bar extensions.
If it does not work I am going to Ducttape the whole thing. The rubberbands do not work in my opinion, everything is way too loose.
I once did a 20k TT without any water. The point was I did not hydrate before the effort either. I bonked and puked my way home. So there is gonna be enough fluid coming with me this time. I want to be on the safe side while doing it for the first time. I can shape seconds of afterwards as well.
I found the rubberbands alone to be too loose as well -- but by putting some rubber tubing bits (like the straw extension piece) under each side of the bottle, and then the rubber bands, that helped. And then I attached a battery pack with duct tape (for a bike computer/gps thing during the IM bike where I knew I'd need the device to have power for the marathon as well) and that weight really helped stabilize it! You can kinda see the ducttaped weight at http://www.asiorders.com/view_user_photo.asp?EVENTID=5722&ID=13717153&FROM=photos&BIB=1767.
Perhaps if the kit doesn't arrive try adding some weight to the bottom and some extra padding between it and your bars? I love my aero bottle... the straw being right there reminds me to drink and all that. I also have only one bottle cage on my bike.

I would recommend what Kyilee said, along those lines. BUT you have to keep in mind that there are MOST likely aid stations along the bike route, and probably a few on the run. So water will be available. I would recommend a bottle of electrolytes, and a bottle of water to wash it down. Or you could go with gatorade, a hammer gel FLASK, and a water. Gel Flasks are easy, and they provide more room. Also, you could always put a cup at your transition area. I always have a gallon of water in transition.

On the bike for an Oly I only carry two bottles that are 3/4 full each. One has the electrolites the other is water and it's more than enough. That along with a GU will carry you through to the run. The races I've done haven't had aid stations on the bike and I don't think you'd want to slow or stop for such a short distance race. Water and sometimes electrolite, should be available during the run. Check with the RD as to where aid stations are and what they have. If they do have electrolite it may not be what your used to so you might want to take a two bottle Fuel Belt. Be sure to follow your nutrition/hydration that you've done in practice. A short distance like an Oly shouldn't give too much problems. Good luck.
I got mine and you can't have it back!

For the Oly's, I find all I need is my aerodrink water bottle filled with accelerade. I take a gel before the swim and at the start of the run, and continue to hydrate with water/sports drink for the rest of the race. I may grab another gel if I feel I need it, but on the run, those things are provided at aid stations.
As far as the flask that o2ripper mentioned, that carried 5 gels, and seems to be a bit of overkill for an oly.
I'm not sure how to fix the aerodrink problem ... mine fits like a glove. Maybe your aerobars are too far apart?

Hello,
I will be competing in my first olympic distance tri this weekend and was wondering if taking 3 bottles of fluid (2 water, 1electrolite ) was to much for that distance on the bike. I always have 3 with me during training rides of that distance and more. Sometimes I end up with some left over and sometimes not. I have the Xlab saddlewing on my Cervelo and can carry 2 there and one on the downtube. Like I said, this is the first time at this distance and am kind of nervous about it. I would greatly appreciate any input.
Thanks in advance.
