What's the proper breathing method for running. Do you take a good deep breath every few steps or do you take smaller breaths or mix it up.

I've read up on a few different breathing methods for running that involve a recurring pattern. For example, breathe in for two steps, then out for two. The other method involves a three count. In for three steps then out for three. I use the latter pattern for my long, slow runs. Just experiment with the different patterns to see whay you're more comfortable with. Hope that helps.

I am not sure what the best way is to breathe. But I have recently ran with a lot of life long and high calibur college runners and they said if I was more disciplined in my breathing I would be faster. So I began to try to pattern and control my breathing and I have to admit I became faster, I was also working on increasing my stride length and running form (so I beleive the increase was a combo of both, but breathing definitely helped). I beleive the real thing is disciplined and economic breathing! I will look around and see if i can find anything! That is my 2 cents as well!

Keep on Tri-ing,

The way I have always done my breathing is in my nose and out of my mouth. Keeps you from getting dry mouth as much. I never really thought of a pattern to breathing just think in the nose out the mouth. And don't do shallow breathing. That is my 2 cents. Hope that helps some. I have always been a runner and it is more about controling your breathing.
