Going out too hard

I tend to go out too hard in the swim - get into O2 deficit - and then struggle to try and get back to a steady swim.
Are there any workouts to help one get more comfortable with recovering your breathing after going out too hard.
I tell myself to start out easier, but I always end up going way too hard - adrenaline or whatever.
Any help would be appreciated.

I think that's a fairly common occurence. I've had the same issue many times. Not sure about specific workouts, I think you want to keep your effort lower rather than learn to recover well. Try to get some swim warm-ups before the swim to help get out some of those gitters and adrenaline. Then just focus on relaxing and getting in your groove. I usually let the faster swimmers go ahead to keep me from getting caught up in the washing machine and pushing myself too hard.

hope that helps some, congrats again on your race.

The secret is to know your capabilities. Get to race pace as soon as you can. I still believe that you have to go the first 200 hard then get into the pace you know you can handle and that comes when you have put the swim yards (meters) in, and counting your strokes per minute. Sprint pace for me was 75 a minute race pace 60 or 62. 60 -62, would give me a mile in 21 min sprint pace a mile in 20 min not sustanable for a long swim. Don't forget I never have worn a wet suit.
