Pedals??
i use mountain pedals on my road bike because that is what i am comfortable with... i just crossed from mountain bike to road bike... but i am no expert... and am wondering the same thing
A bend in the road is not the end of the road … Unless you fail to make the turn.
You should be able to use the Onza's as a start, they were good pedals back in the day. If I remember correctly the only issue was that since they use elastomers rather than springs, they were affected by temperature. The colder it got the harder it was to get in and out of the pedals and vice versa.
Road and Mtn Bike pedals hold your foot to the crank in very similar ways - they're just designed for different types of riding.
Mtn bike pedals have small platform and are designed for clearing mud and dirt, and allowing you to clip into your pedals very quickly. Mtn Biking often requires you to unclip and reclip many times during a ride so the pedals need to be easy to get in and out of in all conditions (often 2 sided entry). Mtn Bike pedals are also designed for working with shoes that have lots of tread and therefore require small cleats.
Road bike pedals are designed for getting as much of your pedalling energy into the crank arm as possible and for comfort when riding long distances. They generally have wide pedal bases and cleats to spread your weight and force (e.g. Look, Time, Speedplay and Shimano-road types) and because of this they are very comfortable over long distances. I know a few people who have ridden Mtn Bike pedals on century rides and had a lot of problems with hot-spots (sore parts of your feet where force is focused onto the pedal) and have since changed to road pedals. Road pedals are not designed for quickly entering (often only one sided) and exiting (often a quite tight binding between the cleat and the pedal) as roadies generally only unclip for traffic lights or at the end of a ride. Road shoes can allow for a wider cleat as they don't need any tread on the base of the shoe - it's not often a roadie with dismount and run up muddy hillside!
I rode for many years with Mtn Bike pedals on my road bike (rides of 25-70km ususally) and have only in the last couple of years realised the joy of road bike pedals (and road shoes) - No more hot-spots YAY!. I can highly recommend the Shimano road pedals (the ones with the wide plastic cleat that have been released in the last couple of years). They're really easy to clip into and very comfortable to ride long distances. I still ride my Mtn Bike pedals on my commuting bike as l clip in and out frequently through the city.
I hope this helps :)
Great!! Thanks for the advice. The area and bike trail I ride on does require more stops than i would like, maybe the mtb pedals would work ok. But I will definitely look into acquiring some road pedals. Thanks everyone for the input!!

Okay, so taking some advice from a previous thread, I decided to go clipless....here is my newest question. I was able to get ahold of some pedals for 5.00. They are Onza H.O. pedals [ SPD style cleats]. I am under the impression they may be designed primarily for mountain biking, but can i efficiently use them with my road bike? I wouldn't think it would make that much difference, but I have certainly been wrong before.....Can anyone help me out?
Thanks! :D
