commitment issues
maybe a half IM early next season to test your fitness as you train toward a full IM later in the year
Hi Bryan! Welcome!
I think nperlick has a good idea.
Signing up for the IM...Is it that's it seems too overwhelming? Have you done a marathon or a century before? Maybe if you planned out the next year and broke down what you would need to do accomplish your goal it would be easier to commit to it. There's a saying I like to use at work but works for tri too..."How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time!" You take a big, big project and break it down into small pieces, easier to manage. It makes it much easier to reach your goal.
Good Luck whatever you decide.
Lisa :)

Can you do the events individually?
If you can or have then try the 1/2 IM, and then if you are comfortable with that go with IM.
I started running a few years ago with the goal to do a marathon.
I picked up doing Triathlons along the way.
My first year my goal was to do an Olympic Tri and do the Marine Corps Marathon.
I did a bunch of sprint tris too.
Last year I set my sights on doing some sprints some Olympics and a 1/2 IM, and 2 marathons
This year I have done a couple of marathons, some sprints, and a couple of olympics.
I will be doing 1 more marathon, some more sprints, 1 or 2 olympics, a 1/2 IM and then to wrap
up the year with IM Florida.
Every year I have stepped up my goal.
Just my .02 :D
Nothing to it, but to do it
Thanks for the welcome.
I know,as I said that logic would dictate a 1/2 IM. Which I will probably do. I can and have done each of those distances separately and feel confident that I could do them together. The reason I fell compelled to do the IM is that next year will be the last chance to do the Couer d' Alene IM. the fact that I live 45 miles from there is quite appealing. To participate in a worldclass event like that, eventhough not competively, would still be pretty cool. I helped at one of the bike aid stations this year and it was incredibly motivating.
If you have done the distances, and you feel confident go for it. Just have your goal to finish.
I would like to do it under 12 hours but I am doing the one in Florida to just finish.
You mentioned "last chance to do the Couer d' Alene IM " are you moving or is something happening to the event?
Nothing to it, but to do it
No, this is the last year IRONMAN USA is going to be in Couer d' Alene. I think they only had a contract for 3 years.
I have been doing triathlons since '98.
Sounds like you have a good base so doing the training would not be difficult.
I'm having a hard time commiting to do a specific race. It's not like I'm not training and don't feel like I could do the work needed to prepare for an ironman but it's just the idea of committing to it.
Sounds like your undecided whether you WANT to commit the time to it. Remember after you sign and take the plunge YOU HAVE TO MAKE THE TIME. Anything else and you won't be ready. Make a plan and WORK THE PLAN. Come hell or high water. Deep breath and jump, then no excuses. Sometimes if you want to do something but are unsure you should JUST DO IT (as Nike says).
So if I have until next year then why not an IM.... it's a whole year away. plenty of time to prepare.
Yes, tons o time. I started training with a good base in March for an 1/2IM that was in June 19th of this year. Then after ticking the box for IM found out I was eligible for IMC with my time. I had to make a decision then and there on June 24th or so that I was going to commit for the IM. I just took the plunge and haven't regreted it (yet). It has altered a bunch of things in my life but I have adjusted.
But it still requires that I sign up NOW! before it fills up. And right NOW I'm not sure..... can I really run a marathon??? After riding 112 miles.... blows my mind just thinking about it.
I have never run a mary either. Have done only 22mi to date as the longest run. They say that's all you need (i'll confirm that after Aug 28th though :) ). Did 3-4 of that distance since June with a few smaller. Biking that distance followed by a brick is no big deal if you start small and just go. You learn alot about yourself and your body. You have tons of time. Yes, there is pain and some success but training for an IM is not as time constricting as one would think. I have a family with 2 kids and a full time job as a professional. My time is precious but I committed myself to it and have plunged forward.
Hope the info helps and I hope you take the plunge. It's worth it.

Thanks, I know you'e right. The water is only cold at first, then you get used to it, just have to jump. We will see, if I have what it takes to take the plunge.
Good luck to you in Pentictan. I love that place. Some of the best rock climbing at Skaha(sp). Riding through all of those groves and vinyards with that granite background will be very cool.
We just might have to come watch.
Bryan
If you do. Let me know so we can meet up.

I have those too

Hello, my name is Bryan an I have been doing triathlons since '98. I started looking at this site earlier this week and have really enjoyed reading the posts and viewing individual blogs. I think it's good to comisurate.
I titled this commitment issues because right now I'm having a hard time commiting to do a specific race. It's not like I'm not training and don't feel like I could do the work needed to prepare for an ironman but it's just the idea of committing to it. If that makes sense. That almost seems harder than the training. It's like once you send in that form and the money, it's a done deal. Come hell or high water your in up to your neck. Right now if I want to go out and do a sprint that's no big deal or even an olympic little tougher but I've been there done that. The next logical step would be a 1/2 IM but the 2 that are coming up in this area don't fit into my schedule.
So if I have until next year then why not an IM.... it's a whole year away. plenty of time to prepare.
But it still requires that I sign up NOW! before it fills up. And right NOW I'm not sure..... can I really run a marathon??? After riding 112 miles.... blows my mind just thinking about it.
Anyway I look forward to seeing how all this turns out.... feel free to throw in your 2 cents and I'll toss you mine.
