What is the part you love most while racing?
my favorite part is getting out of the pool and running into TI, that is when i know the real race has begun and the "drowning" is over
Help me raise money for the LAF by donating anything that you can. Thank you so much!

My favorite part is just moments before the race starts. There is so much excitement and energy in the air, it's catching. :) You look around at everyone...some people with their game faces on, some people with huge grins, some people with nervous smiles...and you realize that you belong there, that you are one of them, and you are ready to GO! :)

i love that little moment before when you are standing outside the water and you have to pee so bad from excitment, but you know nothing is there. mmmmm...
the good times
For real
coming out of T1 and mounting the bike knowing all those guys who just passed me on the swim are mine. Huntin'em down one by one
I love seeing my kids after the race.
The big smiles, and them hugging me and saying 'Daddy is sweaty and gross'
Then the question that follows 'Daddy when can I do a kids triathlon?'
It gives me chills!! :D
Nothing to it, but to do it
.......Then the question that follows 'Daddy when can I do a kids triathlon?'
I never thought of that part beads. Yes, I get that from my son. He did his first this spring and now keeps asking if he can do another. My daughter is also in the same frame of thought. They see me training and also want to do one of their own. It's fantastic to see them wanting to do tris. Only thing is I told them after Aug I will take them swimming and once they work on to swim better then they can enter.
Yes, I have to say. THAT is the best thing about Tris. Hands Down!

My oldest daughter is 7.
She missed out on doing a kids tri this year because she is still using training wheels.
We are working on learning to ride without them so she can get into a couple of events next year.
Of course my 4 year old daughter is quite upset she has to wait a couple of years to do one.
She wants to learn how to ride without training wheels too. :D
Nothing to it, but to do it
In a few years, my favorite part of racing will be when my kids are racing with me.
Of course, soon after that, passing me, and waiting for me at the finish line. :D

This is going to sound shallow, but.......
To pit yourself against fellow man and see how many people you can SMOKE!!! Pure and simple competitiveness. Me against me...me against the previous me...me against the clock...me against YOU! BRING IT ON!!!!! (Diclaimer: I'm about to have a Howard Dean moment...)
AAAAGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jeremy
my favorite part is the run...because i have never been pasted by anyone on the run
If you get a flat, and don't have a tube, Suck it up and run it in!!!
Jsoder -"Me against me...me against the previous me...me against the clock...me against YOU! BRING IT ON!!!!! "
If you wrote the me against you, maybe a bit shallow, but the rest is a deeply personal motivator.

I guess you haven't run enough :D
You would probably be surprised at the number of people in the older age groups who are
"Pasting" many of the younger age groups, and in fact winning the overall event.
Nothing to it, but to do it
My favorite is the second half of the bike. I'm probably winded from the swim to start my ride, and it takes a while to catch my breath and get into a rhythm. Then its time to take off.
At the Mighty Wolf Triathlon last month, I was fourth out of the water and I heard a girl yell "go old man." Half way through the ride I caught the eventual winner, and we sprinted the last three or four miles hard --- I knew I would need a good lead going into the run. After yo-yoing that entire stretch, I pulled ahead a few hundred yards from the transition --- hoping that girl noticed the old man was in the lead.
Needless to say, I got pasted in the run and finished 6th. But that was quite a ride.

Not too shabby hitman.
Probably pasted a few people yourself, unless there were only 6 people in the event :D

Actually, I thought I had taken 3rd place. Some young whippersnappers from a college triathlon club were in a heat several minutes behind me, and 3 of them beat my time. There may have been an octogenarian or two behind me, too.
My run times have shown definite improvement this year. After being passed countless times on the run last year, I've been passed a total of 3 times in 5 triathlons this year; about the same number as the bike. Don't ask about the swimming.

My very very favorite part of the race is when a 53 year old man who formerly weighed in @ 260 lbs and smoked a couple of packs of Kools a day passes a less than 30 year old dude who is built like a Greek god wearing a eentsy weenie Speedo. Just makes me feel like all the work is worthwhile.
And if there are no 30 year old "victims" my second fav part of the race is when I get in to the run
rhythm, start to feel like I am actually running, all becomes right with the world and I break in to song.
Lean on me, when you're not strong........
Watch out hitman the kid "shaves".
All over from what I here :D
Nothing to it, but to do it
I'll be in Florida for the IM in Panama City Beach.
I'll have my hairy legs and will only be "pasting" half the field.
But I will finish, and get my cool t-shirt . :D
Nothing to it, but to do it
Yeah Mutt, that reminds me of my absolutely most favorite part of the race. When I was hitting on that 30 year old's girlfriend as she waited 15 minutes for her guy to finish the race. The only thing better would have been if she said yes.

Beads-- I was just trying to inject a little humor. I'm not THAT intense. I have to admit though, part of me likes to compete and wants to see how I stack up against everyone else. And as I learned in my last race, I have a lot of work to do. Nevertheless, the thought of competing really helps motivate me.
I love the way your legs feel when you dismount your bike in T2.
The floating sensation your get as you power your way out of transition
Peace
Tyler

hey hitman, if all those young guys ever come up here, lemme know... and come do the rockford ymca tri on sunday - you'll prolly beat me since i just had final exams today and haven't exercised at all in the last 2 weeks!
and yeah... i like everything about tri's except for the run! I only ever get passed on it...
I'm doing my first tri on sunday (just a sprint 750/20K/5k) but i can tell you i love the nervous/scared out of my mind am i going to survive feeling. Well right now anyway. Hopefully after Sunday ill have the thank god i survived all my self induced torture, let's do it again. :-D
[COLOR=Red]We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing. :p
Hey jsoder,
I am intensely trying to bust your b@lls.
:D
Just having fun!!
Nothing to it, but to do it
I go to see the pretty girls!!!
My favourite part of tri is the bike, I hate the swim I do the best that I can on the swim but I dont do well!! I swallowed major quantities of Lake Ontario It was not plesent. But I got my s...t togeather and finished the swim! I will never forget this I choked on Lake Ontario but finished the swim ! Then getting out on the bike I kicked ass!!! I really did!! I also knocked 4 min off my run from the last race I did!! But my fave is the bike!!!
the best part about racing in general is knowing that in the end, i have nothing left and still push my body beyond its threshold knowing i will collapse....and at the end of the race be 1000% certain that i would do it again in a heart beat.
steve prefontaine could not have said it best.......
For me the best part about tri's is just the electric atmosphere, it's contagious.
I like the spectators clapping, I like exiting the water, T1, the feel of your legs when you bike in the Aero position, going into T2 and finally begin the run and the felling in your legs when you do the miles.
Noel.

It ain't much, if it ain't Dutch!!
Oh yeah, the spectators. On my rides and runs there are no spectators. There is nobody yelling and clapping. I love this feeling when you leave the water and run through the spectators to T1. In the water I do not hear anything so this is the first experience of them in the race.
In my first race this season it was raining so much. And on the bike course there was only one spectator, clapping and telling me to push harder. This was a great moment.
My favorite part about racing is exiting the water, I love the feeling of a great swim and the last mile of the run where you really dig down to finish strong.
On a side note...I think it is great when someone twice my age passes me, I think wow this is what I have to look forward to! And after that moment I try and push a little harder :)
So many favorites... Getting up at 4:30 am or earlier adn knowing that most of the world (or time zone) is still sleeping. Spraying PAM on my body as spectators try to figure out what these weirdo triathletes are doing. Passing people on the run. The finish line. Watching as firsttimers finish, seeing the satisfaction on their faces and knowing another person just got hooked on the sport.

Aside from every aspect of training and racing - the best part is seeing the improvements from the hard days of training paying off in a race.

My favorite moment is the point on the run when my attitude changes from "What the #%$& am I doing out here!" to "Yes, I've knocked another tri down!". And you can't beat the hugs at the finish!
Or the look of those receiving the sweaty gross hugs :D
Nothing to it, but to do it
my favorite part about racing is the other racers. As competitive as this sport is you will not find a more friendly group of people as a whole! It doesn't matter if you finish first or you just barely finish there is always someone on the course, at the finish line or transition giving you words of encouragement! You don't find that in most competitions where one competitor is encouraging or cheering on another competitor. During my first tri I had so many people pushing me and encouraging me that I knew that no matter how hard a sport that triathlon is that this is what I wanted to do from now on! The comraderie and friendships that we have in the transition areas before races and the post race parties can't be matched by another group of athletes as a whole anywhere!!!

Hey!, I hadn't even that triathlon on the schedule!
I'm doing the sprint at the Ripon Medical Center Triathlon Saturday.
Maybe if these old legs feel up to it, I'll do a double.
Now that should even things up!

Maybe you should do some pushups just before the finish line to let them catch up a little. :D

Caroline24--what is the Spam for?...to make you slippier?
Beads—I wasn’t 100% sure…but figured I’d roll over and show you my belly and see what happens. You can bust my b@lls whenever you see the need.
Sfricks—that’s funny. I ask myself the same question every time.
Motivation:
I agree...I like the spectators too...I just wish there was more. During a race last weekend we were on the bikes going through some large suburb areas. It was really cool because they had all of the streets barricaded off and cones setup for miles. In fact, on the way to the venue, I saw all of this and thought to myself, "could this be for the triathlon?...nah...the scope is too big...and we are too far away...they must have some kind of construction project going on." Sure enough, it was for us...can't imagine what that must have cost! Anyhow, to the point, I was feeling really tired around the half-way point and we hit a long semi-steep downhill. We were pounding our largest gear and hauling @ss!...going 40+! The cops had all traffic stopped at the intersection at the bottom of the hill and we came SCREAMING past them only feet from their bumpers!! My mind drifted to what the drivers of these cars must me thinking! (IN THE NAME OF EVERYTHING HOLY, WHAT THE HOLY @$&^#!?!?!?!...and the looks on their faces!! (wide eyes, slack jaw)
...and for a second I forgot about the pain.
Jeremy
 I will also be competeing in the Ripon Triathlon on Saturday. I am a little confused on the Transition area situation. I am under the impressin that on your way out of T1 you have to place all of you gear into a plastic bag with your number on it. How in the heck can I be concentrating on racing, if i have to be worrying about if I remembered to put everything into my bag? Sort of wierd, but just another quirk of small town triathlons.
Good luck at the race hitman, I will be the guy who doesn't look like he should be racing. This is my very first triathlon w/o my mountain bike. I will be racing a speacialized alluez. When I ride it I feel like I am flying.
Good luck to everyone who is racing this weekend.
My favorite part of the race is anytime you pass someone who stopped and your body says "it's alright to stop too, and you mind says to your body, "are you kidding me, your not stopping." Inner turmoil is what I love the most.
Peace Out,
rhendric
Caroline uses the Pam so she can be butter flavored without all the fat and calories of real butter,
and to void the warranty on her wetsuit. Though it helps to get in the wetsuit
but so does bodyglide. :D

Beads has it right... its all about the butter flavor. I actually think its better than bodyglide (and tastier). Its especially important around the ankles.

rhendric -
I know there are 2 transition areas at the Ripon Triathon. Presumably, they're not terribly far from one another. I generally try to arrive early for any triathlon, to give myself lots of time to wake up both mentally and physically --- the later being the biggest problem. Even if T2 is a mile or two from T1, I'll just ride my bike over to T2, set up a towel and shoes (all you really need; maybe a bottle for a quick sip), and I'll be all set.
Good luck tomorrow. I'll be the old geezer in yellow and black.

Pam the low cal, low fat alternative with the yummy buttery flavor!!
Now also available in Olive Oil flavor. :D
It is much tastier than Bodyglide I must admit.
Does your wetsuit seem affected by it?
How come they can't make a spray on bodyglide??
Inquiring minds want to know!!!

What part do I like least?
The part where I blow my front tire while going 35 mph downhill.
That's what happened Saturday. Call it a learning experience for the future.
The amazing thing is that I didn't wipe out, and even though I lost at least six
or seven minutes, I caught several other old geezers two miles into the run,
and ended up winning my age group by a couple of minutes.
I thought about racing Sunday against Catwood in Rockford --- but not for long.
I dodged a bullet on Saturday --- no sense in tempting fate.

Just wondered what the ultimate point in a race is.
I really like getting body-marked, from that point on I feel ready to race.
Leaving T1 is nice and hammering on the bike, too.
But I think most of all I love getting my stuff ready in the transition area, thinking about the event and then start.
So please share your love :)
