I have a question for all of you IM'ers out there regarding fueling and carrying everything. I have a bento box and plan to use that on the ride to carry a gu flask, as well as my back pocket in my tri top to carry a bp sandwich, chapstick and ibuprofen. At T2 will I then grab anything else I need for the run portion ie: gu (I like to be self sufficient on marathons and not rely on the support stations unless necessairy )????? At that point it should just be another gu flask I.

Also a dumb question, I can have stuff in my Bento box at T1, but the stuff that will need to go in my tri top pocket will need to go in at that time too I would assume correct? I plan to wear the same thing from swim to run. Do you guys just add it to your "checklist"?
Thanks everyone in advance for your help with this.

Yeah, I went with a checklist and then also had a large (freezer size) ziplock of "things for pockets" in my transition stuff. That way I could just throw them in and know I got it, and checklist could basically say "fill pockets".

PERFECT! Thank you!! The ziploc is a great idea:) I have been pondering this for a while now, and since I am down to a little more than 3 weeks now, thought I should ask the pros!

I also do as kyillee with the ziplocs for small things.

If you can get the stuff in your pockets after the swim, in T1, it can save you time later.

I don't like to put any solid food stuff that gets 'melty' in my pockets in T1.

I had a powerbar in my tri top pocket last year, it also was like 85 degrees out.

When I opened it on the run later it practically poured out of the wrapper. it was a mess.

Kyillee,

Do you use a different list for IM?

I am working on my list to prep for IM Florida and am making changes.

Any input would be appreciated.

:D

I looked for my IM list to post it, but right now it is not being found :-)
What I usually do is start a list and put down everything I can think of. Then I keep it with me and add each little thing I think of, and I do this sometimes for almost a month before the race. I just like making lists though ;-)

can anyone allude to the reasons for changing clothes (shirts/shorts) at T1 and T2?

i assumed you would just wear tri clothes under wetsuit like we ive always done.

I am planning(we'll see how it actually works) to change at T1 and T2.

In shorter distance races you want to save time in transition and you can deal with wearing something throughout.

For my T1 at the IM I am going to take off my wetsuit and put on bike shorts, shirt, socks, bike shoes, helmet, sunglasses, and bike gloves. I want to be a little comfortable on the ride.

A few extra minutes in transition won't hurt my overall performance.

For T2 I plan to change into running shorts, running shirt, socks, running shoes. Might as well feel a little fresh for a marathon, after the other 2 legs.

I have heard of some other people doing this too. I know the elites, and pros may not change so much because they are trying to win.

Well for my IM coming up , I plan to wear the same thing, other than possibly changing my socks from the bike to the run. I figure less to worry about, and less to forget (at least thats the plan for now). I have trained in my tri shorts for the bike so its not a big deal for me to wear them for the bike. Just what I plan to do, dont know if its better or worse than any other plan. I have 2 friends who actually do complete changes so I know lots of people do that.

I did partial changes. I swam in a wetsuit with my tri shorts and sports bra under. In T1 I added socks and a jersey, as well as bodyglide! Then in T2 I changed the shirt and socks again, and more bodyglide. I just wanted to be comfy, and the time it cost wasn't a huge deal to me.

Me too. I am going to wear the shorts and tri top (hopefully the Trifuel one) HR monitor and Race # under the wetsuit so that all I have to do in T1 is strip the wetsuit, put socks, shoes and food in back and go. I am used to it because of other races, and I practiced that way throughout my swims w the wetsuit. In T2 I will change socks though so the comfyness is there for the run. Maybe have an extra pair in special needs for the run (just in case). Water from aid stations will be used for cooling so they may make the feet excessively wet. We'll see.

BBB- be CAREFUL with the water at aide stations. I made that mistake at the DW marathon this year when it was hot. Feet got wet and got a hot spot on the bottom of my foot...hurt wose than a blister, I was sure I had open skin, but nope just a hot spot. Any way, just be careful with that , its hard on such a long run with heat but you really need to. Also just the water on the ground around the aide stations can be a problem.

Brittda -- sports bra. I'm not really sure what the difference is between a tri and a sports bra. It's just a champion one that is the most comfortable one I have, and that dries pretty quickly. I've done almost all my races in it.

Brittda -- go with what is comfortable for you. I don't go anywhere for 12+ hours in clothes that will annoy me or get on my nerves, and I saw that the same. Just do what seems comfy and you should be fine.

Scott -- BNS? And I still think guys are lucky since they don't have to deal with the varied sports bra options
