Near Miss
what blows my mind is if you had been walking she would have gotten out of the van and apologized. Sometimes it just doesn't make sense.
What really bugs me are the people who drive by and tell you to get off the road. For some reason there is a large part of the population that forgets that cyclists are not blocking traffic, they are traffic, and are entitled to use the roads in the same manner that cars are.

Think about stopping and having a little chat with her next time.
You, being on the road and part of traffic have right of way over a vehicle entering traffic.
Remind her of that and maybe get her plate number and give the police a call.
I always have my cell phone with me on the bike for emergencies.
Life or death on the bike sometimes.
Not too cool.
Glad you survived to tell the tale. :D
Nothing to it, but to do it
alright, so this is what, about the 50th post on bicycle "almost" accidents, and we have had quite a few actual accicendt, and death stories. And either we all have been in an accident or know someone personally who has been in a bike accident (for the most part). Ok so i guess im just venting too. My ex-girlfriend (was my girlfriend at the time of the question), asked me why i do the sports that i do. So i told her, but failed to mention how dangerous the sport is. Then i asked her, y did she do cheerleading. She told me some reasons, then she said...you can die in this sport....so im thinking to my self...yes i know you can die in that sport, given the fact that she was a flyer, but i held everything in about how i know quite a few people who have gone down on the bike, who have had serious injuries on the bike, even running...and how many close incounters i have had, how lucky i am.
ok..just wanted to vent...i guess the whole point of that was to say, people who dont do our sport or one of the 3 disciplines, dont get it...just dont get it...not mab the reason y we do it...but how dangerous it is for all of us every time we clip in on the bike, or head out on the run
If you get a flat, and don't have a tube, Suck it up and run it in!!!

I guess I am posting pretty much just to vent. While on a training ride yesterday, I was making my way out of town to hit the bike trail. I was going about 20mph, and saw a van sitting in a driveway, nothing much out of the ordinary, so I kept trucking along. Right when I got to the driveway the lady in the van throws it in reverse and guns it without looking. Noticing that I was in the danger zone I pumped my legs as hard as i possibly could and she missed my back tire by about 1/4". I was a little shaken after that considering I believe if she would have made contact she wouldn't have been able to stop until she rolled over me! I was furious! When I got past the driveway and turned to give her the 'are you crazy gesture' she stared me down like I was the idiot. Argh. Drivers irritate me a lot lately. I just needed to vent to some sympathetic ears.
