I have been told that during an IM you should never consume your gel with gatorade...always with water. Has anyone else heard this? I am curious as to why this might be true. Taking gatorade AND water on my long rides just isn't practical, but I am a little scared now to head out the door armed with only gel and gatorade.

Hey man,

I'm not sure, but I think we had a question like that a little while back.
Anyway :) I usually wash my gels down with gatorade, but if you have the powder-Gatorade-just-add-water-stuff, and if you're worried, maybe you should just add 1 scoop instead of 2 into your waterbottle, but I think it's realy just what you prefer, some people use Gatorade, some use water I guess.

Nole.

The reason you should not drink sports drink when eating gels is that the resulting carb concentration in your gut may be too high to facilitate rapid digestion/absorbtion. That being said, if you've trained to be able to take the gel with the sports drink, that's fine. My coach even told me that during the bike in Kona last year that I shouldn't bother with clear water just so I could keep my sodium levels high.

Personally, when I'm on training rides or runs where I need to carry all my fluids, I rarely bring plain water, and so I'm downing gels with Gatorade.

Bottom line: do what works for you, and be aware that in race conditions, the gel/sports drink combo may be too much for your stomach. You only need like 4 oz. of water to wash down a gel--if you can do that at an aid station, that's fine.

E-gel is the only gel I'm aware of that makes a big deal about taking their gel with water. Their claim is that thier gels already have electrolites in them (unlike other gels) and if you take them with an electrolite drink you upset the "balance".

I try and consume my gels with water at aid stations on the run.

On the bike I have a water bottle.

Too much sweet stuff makes me nauseous.

I have also been drinking carbopro and using thermolyte tabs for electrolytes.

It cuts down on all the sugar, and my stomack feels better

I use Accelerate w/ gels when I ride, but I'm careful with my portions. I do not eceed 100 grams of carbs per hour. I tested this for months, so I know (for me) digestion is not a problem. For the run, I use water for gel consumption. This reduces carb intake, as the stomach has a much more difficult time breaking down nutritional intake when bouncing around.

I use gels with Accelerade, GU20 and Gatroade, in any case it does not bother my tummy. When I do my long runs, I only carry the sports drink so have no choice but to take it with that really. Have never had a problem, but thats just me.
