Well as you may or may not know, a huge heat wave came through the Midwest on Sunday. There was the Nissan Xterra, Racine 1/2 IM, Indy race, bike race, and 4 shorter triathlons. It wasn’t the best race conditions for anyone. I did the Door County Tri Olympic distance. The start of the race was delayed by 1 hour to 9am because at 5am very sever weather came through and some serious damage. I had higher expectations on this race. I’ve purchased a new bike, got a wetsuit and trained my butt off. I felt very good going into it. My swim was terrible. Started to get motion sickness from the swells created by the wind. Never got in a rhythm, just bad. I should have come in about 26 minutes, come in at 31. T1, bad. My wetsuit got caught on the chip and my Live Strong bracelet and I got on my bike right away as opposed to running to the “mount line. Bike: My avg. was only 19mph, faster then prior races, but still should have been faster. Side winds the entire route w/ jello for legs. Fortunately we had some trees for a small amount of relief. T2, not bad. And then there’s the run. Total, utter suffering. I made sure to stop at every h2o station to drink and pour h2o on me. Just couldn’t cool off, therefore my body was working very hard to cool me off. My run should have been around 48:00, instead it was 1:03 AAHHHH. But I must say, with the conditions, I’m just glad I finished. And I did actually run the last 3/4-mile. That was the only time during the race that it felt right. Oh well, a tough training day. Next Oly tri in 2 weeks in the Central Valley of California where the temps could be the same. I’ll be better prepared this time.

p.s. To show you how dehydrated I was/am. I finished the race 12pm on Sunday. I just peed for the first time at 5pm on Monday. And believe me I’m drinking a ton of fluids. Kind of scary. I told my husband if I felt like this after the races, I’d change my hobby.

For a 1st time triathlon, this was a very good race. I'd recommend it.

Racing in the heat is tough - but you made it!
I did the 1/2IM in Racine on Sunday - so can relate to the heat.
Couple things - make sure you are drinking a sports drink as well as taking some sodium.
You need the electrolytes. Make sure that you drink enough on the bike. Drink every 10-15 minutes or less when that hot out.
Again drink water when taking a gel, but otherwise use a sports drink.
Also I wear a hat on the run and fill it with ice at the aid stations so it has a nice cooling effect.

The crazy thing is I had to pee during the run. At 1.5 mi. I used the port-o-potty, yet the sweat is pouring off of me. During the bike I only drank about 10 oz. of Endurance and 5 oz. of h2o. I don't drink as much during the bike as to try to not go pee during the run, that didn't work. I took a gel at the run start along w/ 10 oz h2o. H2o stations were every 1.5 mi. that was HUGE. Where I took in about 5 oz. of Endurance and 2 oz. of h2o along w/ another cup of h2o over my head. My nice cool hat did help. Post race, for 1 1/2 hours I had a cup of Endurance and h2o in my hands at all times. But man, I just felt I was better prepared. I initially trained during the hotter parts of the day in order to prepare for this type of situation. It's just frustrating. I will look into the sodium tablets. I guess I should have paid more attention in Biology and Chemistry.
