I am an Ironman in training. I can send you a copy of my schedule if you wish. Just send me a private email.

For those people doing IMs out there ... What is your maximum weekly milage in a week?
Currently I'm at:
S: 4 km
B: 100 miles
R: 30 miles
per week
longest run: 14 miles
longest bike: 50 miles
My goal by January '06 (for IMAZ in April '06):
S: 12 km
B: 250 miles
R: 50 miles
per week
longest run: 20 miles
longest bike: 100 miles
No experience to really help you out, but I'm planning to do 1 long bike and 1 long run each week. I'll fill the rest of the milage with runs that are about half the distance of my long workout.
I'm 3 weeks out of an IM distance race. For me is more important to cover key events or work-out in the build period. For example: 2x 5 hours ride, 2 X 6 hours ride (about 100mileseach ), one 4x2 hours brick, went up to 2x18 milers running and long swims. I did a long base training period, which I hope it helps me to complete the race. After 3 weeks I'll tell you if the plans works, for now keep looking around :D
I just completed my first IM and used Ironman's Start to Finish: Ironman Training by Paul Huddle and Roch Frey (available on the Ironman website). I started around week 17 of the training schedule because I'd been training with a coach til then, and when he bailed, I needed some guidance.
Although they offer several workouts a day, they highlight key workouts which are flexible depending on your available time. I wasn't sure that would be enough for me...but it was. I never rode over 100 miles and never ran more than 15 miles. I know that is not enough for some people, but since my goal was to finish the race, I felt that was fine. If and when I do my next IM, I will put in some 100-milers on the bike but probably wouldn't run more than 15 miles.
I think it really depends on your skill level and your goal for the race. GOOD LUCK!!

I haven't done an IM (although I plan to in '07) but there are a lot of people on Gordo Byrn's forum who discuss this very thing...how big of a base should you build in each sport before IM.
I've gleaned a lot of great information from those guys. (Forewarning that they are largely very hard-core AG'ers and some pros. But there are also coaches that pop on as well. )
Basically, if you've read anything by Gordo, you know he's an advocate of building a huge bike base. He believes that's the cornerstone of IM. (And that's led him to IM and Ultraman wins, so I guess he's figured something out.)
I don't mean to discount any of the great advice from folks on trifuel. But, I've found the info on Gordo's site and forum incredibly helpful as well, especially regarding Iron distance events.

Good luck!

I am attempting to move up to Ironman distance races and I am interested in people's opinions of the necessary "long" rides or runs needed before completing your first ironman (where the goal is simply to finish the race).
Lets try to confine this to the 4 months before the race - and I'm interested in general guidelines.
For example, how many runs of 13+ miles should be completed before the race. How many 18+ mile runs? What is the longest run you should do before a race?
and similar questions in biking.
Any advice or past experiences would be appreciated
thanks.
