Who took je jelly out of that guys donut?
What is this guy a hermit, that doesn't like to train.. socialize.. or come out in public?
He sounds pretty cranky. He might want to try and sell some book he's written and try getting some attention to it, by acting like he's the only person that can see that Lance is evil or something. We're all oblivious too it, but Neal Pollack is onto him!
Maybe if he took 2 minutes more and figure out it where the people in his "precious" gym, that screwed up his gym, not Lance himself, I doubt he came over from France just to redecorate Neal's gym into a shrine.
"I don't go to the gym to get motivated. I go to relax, or because I've eaten a half-dozen donuts in the last 24 hours. Anyway, I was there. Wasn't that enough? "
I think that about sums up, what type of person Neal is.

My brain hurts....talking about a guy like that.
Noel.

I personally thought it a clever piece. In no way did I gather that Pollack was trying to discredit Lance's accomplishments in the Tour or in life.

But I think the crux of the piece was the iconic hero worship that's now displayed all over his gym. I think it goes beyond Lance the person and onto something deeper about how we look to sports figures as gods. (Not just Lance but all of them!)

Case in point:
"Honestly, I don't care if or how he "enhances" his performance. He's the greatest bike racer of all time. He beat cancer, and now he raises money to help others do the same. That's great. But please tone down the iconography and the sloganeering."

Yet, we fail to realize that we have the same, if not more, power within each of us. Being a native Texan and aspiring cyclist/triathlete, I wear my yellow bracelet with the best of them. I think Lance is a great athlete and deserves his share of recognition but by the description of the article, it sounds like 24-Hour Fitness has gone to a whole other extreme.

The fundamental breakdown I see is in the country's obsession with Lance and what he's done on the tour is that people wearing bracelets similar to mine still mow down cyclists every day in their hurry to get somewhere!! (I saw it almost happen last night to some poor roadie.)

i agree trigirl, its a tongue in cheek look at our decidedly american idiosyncrasies. i also agree with the author that that much crap hanging up in the gym is very distracting and somewhat pointless. i dont go to the gym to get motivated, i go there because I AM motivated.
and GO LANCE!!!!!!

The author is getting ripped off if he is paying $63 dollars a month for a gym membership.

I pay $25 a month to got to a YMCA near my work.

It has a pool and is open 17 hours a day (5am-10pm) M-F and 16 hours on weekends.

I think it is a commentary on the fancy sponsored gym idea.

Golds, Crunch, Bally's, etc.

I don't need my rates to go up so I can see some sports icons' , jersey, stinky shoe,
or brass plated jockstrap under glass either.

I'll go to a museum or trendy sports bar for that.

They usually have good special on wings too! :D

My Y is a couple of years old.
It is combined with a community center so that may defray the costs.

I used to pay about $35 a month.
I work around the corner so a few of us here at work talked to our HR dept and they got us a corporate dicount. Now I get the $25 a month. It is a gret deal.

I can do my swim during lunch, then I can go later to use the elliptical or treadmill and the weight machines.

They only have a few weight machines but that is not the big draw for me. It has a good pool.

I go to 24 Hr (like him) and I only pay $34. And mine has a pool, sauna, spa, basketball courts...Maybe mine is less because there is only 1 poster of Lance up. ;)

My YMCA is $37 a month for "Young Adults," with a startup fee of $50. That's all Canadian dollars. But it's definitely making a profit somewhere.
