How to ship a bike?
If you have a god relationship with the LBS they may be willing to pack and ship it for you. The shop I used in Jersey before I moved did it all the time for people. Just charged a few bucks to pack it and then the shipping charges. With what some airlines charge today, it can be cheaper. And the shop is likely more experienced at packing it up well for a long distance trip in the hands of UPS.
I purchased a bike in the US while living in germany. The bike was shipped via UPS and was packed in a Trico IronHardcase. Anyway the case is made of plastic not of iron. It costs 200$ and is worth it. They do not treat bikes too careful.
The bike is quite safe in it if packed properly.
I would check the bike onto the plane, they will male you pay approx. 50 bucks. On international flights in most of the times a bike is for free.
if you wanna check it into the plane, you can get boxes from a local bike shop and take it apart yourself and pack it. make sure you use two boxes and put PLENTY of 'handle with care' posts on it. i packed mines like so a few years ago coming form hawaii to kentucky and failed to do so and the first thing the attendant did was flip it upsidedown and toss it inot the conveyer belt. when i got it back, the head tube had a wicked dent and could not fit my fork back inside. i had to get a new frame.
my friend did the same thing as i did and he used two boxes and put some clothes as cushion and he had no problem. it costs i think 50$ to carry it with you.
a bike box is a good investment if you like travaling with your bike.
in any case, good luck and have fun on your trip

I'm going to fly to the east coast later this summer and am planning to take my bike with me. I was wondering how to go about doing this. Should I UPS it? Put it in a box and check it onto the plane? yikes. Ride it across country? kidding... for now. :p And packaging? Any suggestions?
