distances?
70.3 and 140.6 miles
full distance is 112 mile bike ride 2.4 mile swim and a 26.2 mile run
half is literally half that 70.3 miles total
Phew...what a goal. How long can I expect to train before reaching the physial ability to accomplish that? I just started training and just finished my first tri, a sprint, in 1:55:35. Just to give a general idea of where I am at. I would expect year(s), Yea?

Myself I am giving two years to make it happen, i dont plan to go for completion, I plan to be competive. My first tri which was a sprint 400m swim 30k bike and 5k run here were my results
swim T1 bike T2 Run
8:10 1:45 51:01 1:23 20:54 1:23:11
I would say two years is good for anyone, discipline is the key though to making it happen. You could probaly do it in one year and you may barely cross the finish line. Give two years and blow the tape off maybe. Good Luck to you its one hell of a dream to have.
PS doing a half is the way to go and running a few marathons would not hurt either, the running portion is what would break me at this point and I am a strong runner.

Running is by far is the most challenging for me. I used to weigh 268 lbs (now 170ish) have damaged knees from that, child-bearing hips, if you will, and my sciatic nerve is easily irritated. I am in no mood to let those things stand in my way at this point. As a strong runner, what suggestions do you have to improve running endurance/strength...etc? I have a high thresh hold of perceived exertionl, which does help.
p.s. I often get bored running before I get tired...

As for the boredom I suggest two things. 512mb mp3 player with fun hard hitting music that is of a up beat tempo. Running with a partner is great also. When you have some one you can take your mind off things and talk and all that jazz. First your need to establish your base and see what you are capable of. You can cant just start running 7 miles every other day if you dont have the base for it. There is a good book on running a little technical but still good called Running Formula by Jack Daniel's( I know the name is funny but the guy is highly credited)
heres a link of what the book looks like:

What kind of running are you doing now and are you in any sort of pain at all before after or during? The most important thing in running to me is getting the right shoe. If your feet are taken care the jolting effects of running should be minimized.
I agree with pernfilman, a good mp3 player with some great tunes REALLY helps on the long runs, and vary the tempo of the tunes so that you can work off the rhythms of the music with speed play (fartleks). I have added a bunch of tunes on the mp3 so that when I go for my long runs (>2hrs.) I can vary the pace and bounce away to the tunes. It breaks the bordum. This past Sunday I went for a 3.5hr. run. The first 1.5-2hrs. was the radio, listening to crap, then I threw in a few variations in footwork with the tunes I recorded followed by no tunes at all and just listened to the sounds around me. And yes, I did mamage to meet up with another runner and we talked it up as well.
Sometimes I just cock my head back and close my eyes for a few minutes or stare up at the clouds trying to make out shapes/figures (like when we were kids), it's quite medetative once your in the groove with the feet; just close the eyes for a while and sleep, hehe. I have seen some people singing to themselves. That's pretty cool. Oh, and by the way I run on the dyke by the Strait of Georgia, so there is always alot to break the bordum like another one of my faves birdwatching. In my pocket I carry a small pencil and a folded sheet of paper. I keep a list of birds I see each time I go running. I mark down where I have seen what bird etc. by km marker, that way I watch the patterns in birds for the area, it's also a hobby. It's also cool when you look back at your notes and see what you saw a week, two or several months ago in the area. You will learn a lot about the movement of birds and how seaons and weather patterns change the distrubution and numbers of birds for your local area (quite nerdish I know). Anyways, that's how I break the bordum. My 2cents.
