It's good to get the whey, but make sure it has glutamine in it. That is the key to faster recovery after workouts.

Soy protein sucks because it has a hard time absorbing and digesting and it does not have the amino profile that whey does. True whey protein isolate should includes glutamine, but all amino acids are really the key to muscle recovery.

Soy, of course has special benefits to women, but I would still reccomend whey any day, especially to atheletes.

Like gjpure said, if you are a woman use Soy because it is estrogenic. If you are a man stick with the whey, there is much greater benefits and it will be digested and put to use sooner.

Whey all the way! Check out GNC for clearance stuff. I have gotten a 3lbs container of their top of the line stuff for $20... because it was 3 months away from it expiration date. Finished it in a month and 1/2.

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

I wouldn't use the GNC stuff, GNC has very low quality products. If you watch for sales you can get really good deals on ON 100% Whey at http://www.allstarhealth.com I got a 10lbs bag for under $45 shipped.

That said, I found that as I am a little cows milk intolerant, whey, well to put it politely ummmmm bloats me, with inevitable results, but soy is fine.
Conversely, if Ladybritspin takes Soy..terrible stomach cramps etc.
Don't we all get enough protein in our diets anyway? A little & often?
I only 'shake/smoothie' on occasions where I have too short a time between workouts to get a proper meal in & digest it..like tonite, otherwise its pavement pizza time.

I always keep 2 kinds of protein handy. I use whey immediately after my workout. It is important that your proteins has an amino acid profile. It's easy to find, many labels actually say "amino acid profile." If it does not just look for any ingrediant that has an "L" prefix. The other protein I like to use has Caesin or Caesinate as the main ingrediant. It is a slower digesting protein which I like to like to take before bed to help me recover from a tough day. Amino Acids are also available in pill and liquid forms. I suggest the liquid because it is more bio-available which means the body absorbs it more easily and more of what you consume is used. Just what I do...check the labels...that's a huge help.

Ok, well it's bump time.

So, I am interested in using some protein, and the soy/whey debate is certainly one that I have battling with internally.

I AM pretty Lactose intolerant (or, to be more scientific, lactase deficient), so do you think that Whey is going to bother me? I understand that many Whey products claim to be "virtually" lactose free, but just how much lactose is there in "virtually none"? Should I lean toward soy, or just give whey a try?

How about proteins that you use while you are "going long"? Do you use soy or whey? Why?

Aaaannnnddddd, go.
