Afternoon all,

Met up witth Cris before the race, we talked about 'The Beast', and the course in general. We went out separate ways to warm-up, get wet, and ready for the race.

While setting up my bike in the Transition Zone, someone's tubular tire blew, and it created quite a stir. I did have words with another rider though. He brought a lawn chair, and tried to set the thing up in the middle of the aisle. Now, I don't mind being comfy, but if 10 guys can't get to their bikes because of a stupid lawn chair, the lawn chair loses.

Evidently, the temps were high enough to cause several other tires to blow during the race, and afterwards. The temp at the start was around 75F, and the humidty was in the high 70's.

After the first run started, I hit the first mile, and felt my hamstring starting to tighten up again. I slowed the pace down a little, and it seemed to help. Finished the first 5K in 23 flat, a couple of minutes slower than I wanted.

Had a really good T1, under a minute, including taking a Hammer Gel and water. The bike course had been changed several times in the last several weeks, and had gone back and forth. I had changed gearing to handle the bigger hills, and 5 minutes before the race, I find out the smaller hill course is going to be run today.

So, I had the wrong gear cluster on the bike, and I could've used the smaller cluster today. Ended up with a time of 1:18:xx for the ride, not really good, but I also started to cramp up on the ride. I was trying to keep up the electrolytes, but I didn't seem to work too well today on that count. I tangled with a Cadillac in the final mile, seemed the guy wanted to drive on both sides of the road, at 15 mph, and do everything he could to keep a group of cyclists from passing. Finally, I stood up and passed the guy along with a string of riders behind me.

Had a blazing second Transition, pushing the stupid lawn chair out of the way helped.
The 10K turned into a death march, temps over 90, and the humidity heading into the 80's. Lots of sun, and no place to hide. The 10K time was 53:xx or so, with a total time of 2:35:05. Actually, not a bad time for the weather.

Walking back into the Transition Area, another two tires blew out, just sitting on the racks.

Think I'll rest the hammy, and maybe take it easy tomorrow.
