Hello All:

I have done numerous Tri's over the last year or so and have always used a full body wetsuit. Michigan waters are usually a little chilly, but this summer all the big and small lakes are warmer than usual and wetsuits are not allowed (even Lake Michigan). I have never swam in open water without a suit. So i have a race this weekend and am wondering what to wear. I have numerous Orca Tri pants and Tops, but can/should i just wear the bottom in the water. I'm wondering what all you warm weather Triathletes do?

I wear a one piece Sugoi tri suit. I like the Orca suit as well.

I'm not good with two peice setups for short races. It takes too much time to put the top on...

Good luck.

Wetsuits not allowed for a Lake Michigan swim?

The warmest temperature I see in Lake Michigan today is less than 73 degrees.
Most of the lake is in the 60s.

The last 3 weekends, I wore a one piece trisuit.
Depending on water temerature, I may wear a sleeveless wetsuit on Saturday.
One problem with putting on a top on after the swim is if it sticks/rolls up - a real hassle.
Go topless if allowed. It should be warm this weekend.

Well actually now the water in Lake Michigan is somwhat cold. I have been hearing and expecting the Water come this August to be much warmer than normal. The Steelhead Half Ironman is in St. Joes Michigan, where the Lake Michigan water tends to be on the warmest.
The race this week is in an inland lake, water temp is already around 78%

The other question i guess i had, is how wet will your tri shorts get just wearing them in the water for the swim? Have never done it before....

The tri-shorts don't have that thick chamoise pad like bike shorts. Its no problemo.

Unless the triathlon is in some unique bay that gets warm....really warm, swimming in Lake Michigan will surely provide you with a wetsuit option...and Id say use it!!!

I did the inagural "dairyland" tri, now know as "spirit of racine"....it was the end of July and after 1.2 miles my arms were numb from the cold....i had a sleeveless wetsuit . I will be doing it again this year and im not sure what the Big Lake has warmed up to....
