Sorry guys, a little 'girl talk' here... Ladies, some input please!!
Maybe it's just 'cause I'm stubborn, but I try not to let it limit what I do. The main thing that gets harder for me is the long bike or run for the week, and I often just luck out with timing.

If you can pop 2 Tylenol and get out the door, I've found that exercise actually mitigates any discomfort. Yesterday, a 30min workout in the pool made me feel a lot better and healthier than I had when I first woke up.
Or, just plan ahead for that day or two to be your rest days -- your body needs time every now and then to recover anyway, right? So grab a piece of chocolate and a magazine or two and relax if that's your preference, knowing that you'll jump right back into training afterwards!

I have to agree with Tamara - exercise usually makes me feel a whole lot better and I try to keep to my schedule as much as possible. I do find that now, as I'm getting older and things aren't quite as "regular", I sometimes get real tired right before and I have to change my workouts around - swapping shorter workouts for the longer ones I had originally planned. Oh the joys of womanhood..........

To be honest with some women it is just different on what a women can do while it is "their time". I personally and agree work out b/c it takes my mind off discomfort and also because I'm def. a person who feels horrible if I don't get a workout in when expected. Do what you can, take the advice of readin' that magazine and chocolate and get back into what you need to or workout your usual thing or make something a bit easier for yourself. All I gotta say too is one word: Midol =)
Thanks Ladies,
The swim is what gets hindered the most! I really don't feel like working out this morning, but after reading your posts, I'm heading to the gym! I agree that I'll feel better once I get there and start moving!!
Thanks again,
Shell
Honestly, it has zero impact on my workouts....
okay I agree doesn't really affect me during but a week before I get really tired, just push through..........I have always wondered though what about a longer tris that take alot of the day, what about the mechanics, can't leave it in all day, I know guys, don't think about it :o
Anyways, I know one of these days it will hit race day, just curious if you have dealt with any of that part of it
Hmmm...hadn't thought of it from that perspective. I guess that's the beauty of the pill. I'm clockwork and it typically isn't an issue on the weekend...
Like jeslol it's not often a weekend issue for me... was recently though and I was (of course) racing. I just left it in as long as I could and hit portapotties at transitions. It wroked out just fine. Lost a few minutes of time, but it made it possible to race! I also use portapotties for the bathroom during the bike and run though... I just can't bring myself to pee on myself...

I've thought about what to do on the longer races too. Right now, I've just been doing sprints, but would like to try an oly next year and I often thought about the "mechanics". Maybe I'll hit menopause before then and won't have to worry ;) .

For oly's, just wear black shorts and I promise, no one else will be able to tell...
Shell - this is a great question. I haven't raced during that time but for training I have to take a day off. I usually get migraines (had one today as a matter of fact) and my vision gets messed up. I can't even drive. So I just take the day off, relax and let my migraine meds work. Then the next day I usually have a double workout cause I feel so good! :)
well thankfully mine is never on a weekend when races usually are (pill--I know enough information). I DO get VERY tired that weekend before so my long run/ride for that weekend is usually VERY tough. If you do have the problem on race day, you can just tape a tampon to the back of your race number and hit the porta potty at some point during the race. I too refuse to pee on my self . At some point you will have to go anyway.
for me, i experience more discomfort in the PMS phase. the increased appetite, bloating, sluggish workout times and overall malaise kind of creeps up on me towards the end of my cycle. i start wondering why i feel so lousy and my work outs are poor. then it dawns on me...." oh, it''s that wonderful time again!" once my period finally comes it's such a relief! a couple of long sweaty runs and i feel good as new. i try to make it work to my advantage and not have it hold me back.
Hi Shell,
I think this is an excellent question. Seems to have made many people curious Look how many times this thread was clicked on. Surely not just by girls. I think I will just cancel a race if it is on the first or second day. How can a tampon servive the riggers of a triathlon? Catwood's idea is the best, BUT!!!!!!, what do you
do when your bike saddel is not black! ;-)
Mein is actually more a problem of blood count, and I have to be careful to take in enough ferrum in my diet, or my pulse is high, and I get tiered quickly. Anyone else have this problem?

I don't know, I have a mostly black saddle (the fizik arione tri)... but if you have a fresh one in at the beginning, it shouldn't start leaking at least until the very end of the bike, so I wouldn't worry. You could always put a thin black saddle cover on just in case..
like amy, I usually am most uncomfortable and lazy and grouchy in pms and the first day...
I've had problems with a low ferritin count too. I've been supplementing with iron/vitamin c for a couple of years and if I forget for a couple of weeks, I can definitely feel the difference... Just being a female athlete and runner really makes all of us likely to have low iron which causes your body not to use oxygen as efficiently.
It doesn't prevent me from doing stuff. Like others said, I feel more tired and a little slugish and accept that my workout isn't up to par on those days. Didn't have to worry about it for my one and only race but after I signed up for it, I checked my calendar and breathed a big sigh of relief!
Funny thing...I used to have really, really bad cramps and the only thing that would help would be lying in bed with a heating pad. One unexpected bonus of tris-since I've been training, I haven't had those cramps, slight twinges yes, but nothing like they used to be. For that reason alone, I'll keep on training!

I use to be like clock work, even at basic training when others stopped completely. Since starting my training for triathlons I have an easy time...what was once 7 days is now 3 max. One day I feel I might bleed to death but the others are practically nothing. It's awesome. At 33 something good is happening with my body, woo hoo!
I agree with the other ladies who say that working out makes the symptoms better. I have always felt that way and never let that time of the month slow me down. Now having said that there are times when you may need more rest but don't allow that to stop you from working out. Just shift your schedule. I usually swim at 0530 but a few days prior to that time I am feeling really tired and will shift my swim to the afternoon.
It works for me.
:)
Great input from everyone! Thanks so much! We just got home from camping for a few days... sorry I didn't post! I did go workout on Thursday morning, and felt much better! I usually have one or two really really heavy days. I have to do the tampon and pad thing, usually change it every one to two hours. I get really tired and cold from blood loss. Just have to supplement like crazy, sleep and wait. The last two months haven't been too bad. I don't swim during that time, cuz I gush so much.... sorry, too much info! Thanks for all the feedback ladies!! You all rock! There's nothing like women athletes!!
Have a great night,
Shell

What training do you do during ' that time of the month'?
Sometimes I get sidelined pretty good, and want to know if you take a day or two off, work through it, etc...
Thanks
